WMD — Entrenched David Broder

Edited excerpt, commentary by Carolyn Bennett
From W’Post column of a mad man

There is nothing in this man’s earned credentials that should have granted him the influence he has wielded for half a century in U.S. political thought and public discourse, media and public affairs.

He was born a decade or so after the First World War, did a brief stint (drafted) in the U.S. Army writing for U.S. Forces Austria (USFA, circa 1951-53). He took bachelor’s and master’s degrees in liberal arts (1947) and political science (1951), and spent close to half a century (47 years) ensconced, pontificating in one place, The Washington Post, drinking Potomac River water, and breathing the polluted air of corrupt Capitol Hill politics.

Leading into Tuesday’s mid-term election, this entrenched, certifiable mad man held forth in a column demonstrating that he is indeed a weapon of mass destruction long past an urgent call for his permanent departure from public post.

Here’s a selected critical excerpt from political writer David Broder’s war-with-Iran-to-win-reelection madness.

“[President Barack] Obama can still storm back to win a second term in 2012… The crucial case in point is his analysis of economic forces. … Here is where Obama is likely to prevail.…

“[The president] can spend much of 2011 and 2012 orchestrating a showdown with the mullahs. This will help him politically because the opposition party will be urging him on. As tensions rise and we accelerate preparations for war, the economy will improve.

“… [T]he nation will rally around Obama because Iran is the greatest threat to the world in the young century. If he can confront this threat and contain Iran’s nuclear ambitions, he will have made the world safer and may be regarded as one of the most successful presidents in history.”

This is why entrenchment — and with it license to lie, a poisonous pen (or tongue) that propagandizes, furtively proselytizes, and manipulates the masses — is a weapon of mass destruction.
