Brazil’s newly elected president to end poverty

Re-reporting, editing by Carolyn Bennett
“‘We cannot rest while there are Brazilians who are hungry, while there are families living on the street, while poor children are abandoned to their fate.’” — Dilma Rousseff
In her election win over the weekend, Brazil’s president-elect Dilma Rousseff promises “a new era of prosperity” — eradicating poverty while maintaining her country’s economic stability.

President-elect Rousseff said her promise in winning the presidency was to ‘honor women’ of Brazil and allow ‘fathers and mothers to look their daughters in the eyes and say a woman can.’ In winning she also affirmed that she ‘will rule for everyone, speak with all Brazilians, without exception.’

Source and notes

Brazil’s President-elect, Dilma Rousseff (b. December 14, 1947), takes office January 1 2011. She is an economist and politician whose most recent position (2005-) is Chief of Staff to outgoing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In her youth Dilma Rousseff became a socialist and after the 1964 coup d'état joined left-wing urban guerrilla groups that fought against the military dictatorship. She was captured and jailed between 1970 and 1972 and reportedly tortured. After her release, Rousseff rebuilt her life in Porto Alegre with Carlos Araújo. Together they helped found the Democratic Labor Party (PDT) in Rio Grande do Sul state and participated in several of the party’s electoral campaigns. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dilma_Rousseff
