Leaders honestly supporting peace in Syria support “coming to table”

Reckless U.S. Middle East Policy jeopardizes all nations’ relations, domestic and foreign
Editing by Carolyn Bennett

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has welcomed Russia’s willingness to support the independent investigation of the possible use of chemical weapons in Syria and she has also emphasized the urgency of finding “a political solution to the conflict in Syria.”

A Spiegel piece reports Merkel in interview with the newspaper Mittelbayerische Zeitung calling to mind

The ‘terrible civil war … taking place in Syria [that has] … already cost more than 100,000 lives’ [and] can only be ended by a comprehensive political solution.

Angela Merkel said, “‘We must get the parties to the conflict around a table.’”

UN Security Council
The German government, Ralf Neukirch wrote, “has had to perform a delicate balancing act in its approach to possible military intervention in Syria. For foreign policy reasons, [Chancellor] Merkel cannot afford to openly criticize the Americans.

“Instead, she has to dispense her views on an American attack in such a way that they are seen as criticism in Germany and support in the United States. It is a method Merkel has, to a certain degree, perfected.”

Press TV today is reporting Chancellor Merkel saying her country will not participate in a foreign military action against Syria.

Even better
UN General Assembly
In a Sunday televised debate she is quoted saying, “There needs to be ‘a collective answer by the UN’ to the August 21 chemical attack in Syria.” Her opponent in the coming federal election, Peer Steinbrück, said, “Germany would ‘greatly regret it’ if the United States strikes [Syria] alone without an international mandate.”

September Elections

Germany's flag
A German federal election is scheduled for September 22, 2013, to determine the members of the 18th Bundestag, the main federal legislative house of Germany. It can be held earlier or later under exceptional constitutional circumstances (such as in the case where the Chancellor loses a vote of confidence in the Bundestag, then, during a grace period before the Bundestag can vote in a replacement Chancellor, the Chancellor may request the Federal President to dissolve the Bundestag and hold elections earlier.

Germany in context of
Europe, Middle East/Asia, Africa
Peer Steinbrück, a German social democratic politician, is the SPD (Social Democratic Party of Germany) candidate (Merkel is a CDU, Christian Democratic Union of Germany incumbent candidate) for Chancellor of Germany in the 2013 federal election. On September 28, 2012, Steinbrück was nominated by his party as opposition candidate for Chancellor. From 2005 to 2009, he served as German Federal Minister of Finance in the cabinet of Chancellor Merkel.
