The U.S. War on Afghanistan now 12 years old ─ longer
than the official American war on Vietnam ─ has gone on for half a generation, or
more.
On Sunday October 6, 2001, former President George W. Bush announced the attack on Afghanistan. Some perceived the action as revenge for 9/11; but that was only a pretext for action that U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Vice President Richard Cheney and “other neo-cons” had been planning for many years. On the morning on 9/11, Rumsfeld said:

The United States of America under the leadership of the Obama government has vastly increased the use of militarized drones and
surveillance drones ─ especially against the peoples and lands of the Middle
East, South Central Asia and Africa ─ as part of its expansion of “special operations”
and “targeted (extrajudicial) killing”.
Across national borders and in violation of international
law, “Reapers,” “Predators,” and “Golden Hawks”, all varieties of drones (UAVs, unmanned aerial vehicles), are the growing face of the U.S. “war
on terror”; and these weapons have caused the deaths of thousands of people.
The Network to Stop Drone Surveillance and Warfare is
therefore laying organizing grounds for a protest to occur within the United
States on November 15 through 17, 2013
Protest at General Atomics in
Washington, D.C., a major manufacturer of drones, Friday, November 15. Actions
are called at other manufacturers around the country.
Drones Around the Globe:
Proliferation and Resistance (Registration and Program) Washington D.C. the
weekend of November 16-17, 2013.
Organized by CODEPINK, Institute for Policy Studies, The Nation
Magazine, and National Lawyers Guild (Georgetown Chapter), coordinated actions
will complement and support the gathering.
TBIJ’s “Naming the Dead”
The Bureau of Investigative Journalism has launched a
dedicated website – www.namingthedead.org – which lists the known names of
those reported killed by drones in Pakistan together with as much biographical
information as can be gathered. At launch the site listed just over 550 names,
collated from media reports, court documents and academic and NGO publications.
This represents little more than one in five of the 2,500 people that are reported to have been killed by drones in Pakistan. Of the named individuals, 295 are CIVILIANS, including 95 CHILDREN, while 255 are alleged militants. There are only two WOMEN identified.
