Nuclear power and its deadly dangers are unnecessary. … The issue of switching to safe, clean energy is not technological but political.

The problem is vested interests —

·       Government agencies that push nuclear power, notably, in the United States, the national nuclear laboratories and the entity that owns them

·       Department of Energy (headed currently by a former national nuclear laboratory director)

·       Nuclear industry as it seeks to profit from selling nuclear technology, despite the cost in people’s lives

These same entities are pushing nuclear power worldwide as evidenced by General Electric’s involvement in the construction of Japanese reactors and the U.S.-India Nuclear deal. 

China and other emerging nations also are expanding plans for nuclear power despite the horrific memories of Chernobyl, now Fukushima.

Disgracefully demanding nuclear power on earth and in space has been U. S. President Barack Obama.

Since taking office as president, he has reversed the position he espoused as candidate for the presidency. Even in the wake of the Fukushima disaster in Japan, the U.S. president seeks to ‘revive’ the nuclear industry using billions of taxpayer dollars to build new nuclear plants. This administration has been pushing also to ‘revive’ the use of nuclear power in space by restarting U.S. production of Plutonium-238 for use on space devices.

The Global Network against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space is calling for —

End of nuclear power on earth

·       Although the nuclear establishment claims this is impractical, it is not

·       In the U.S. where nuclear power provides 20 percent of the electricity, there is a 20 percent reserve capacity in the electrical system. All 104 U.S. nuclear plants could — and must — be immediately shut down

·       The reserve capacity can deal with their absence

·       A concentrated effort could — and must — be made to swiftly bring the safe, clean energy technologies on line

·       Instead of promoting nuclear power expansion globally, the nuclear power industry should be dismantled or converted to a green technology industry

 

End of nuclear power in space

·       Accidents such as the 1964 SNAP-9A disaster in which a plutonium-powered satellite fell from orbit, disintegrating and spreading plutonium widely have demonstrated the folly of using nuclear power overhead

·       This plutonium release has been seen to cause an increase in lung cancer on earth   

Closure of all national nuclear laboratories

·       Nuclear laboratories have been breeding grounds for developing lethal atomic energy — on earth and in space

·       An effort is under way in Washington to cut back federal government spending

·       Closure of all national nuclear laboratories is a federal government activity that must be cut back —among them a string of national nuclear laboratories including Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, Lawrence Livermore, Idaho, Sandia, Brookhaven, Lawrence Berkeley, Argonne that spend  billions upon billions in taxpayer money annually while developing deadly nuclear technology

We all live in Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Fukushima — unless the nuclear juggernaut is stopped.

During the World War II Manhattan Project, scientists working at laboratories secretly set up across the United States built atomic weapons, journalist Karl Grossman writes. “By 1945, [the Project] employed 600,000 people and spent billions of dollars. Two bombs were dropped on Japan. With the war’s end, the Manhattan Project became the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and more nuclear weapons were built. … Many of the scientists and government officials did not want to see their jobs end. Corporations that were Manhattan Project contractors — notably General Electric and Westinghouse — did not want to see their contracts ended.…”

The reality is “nuclear power can never be made safe.… The problem is radioactivity—unleashed with the splitting of the atom. All nuclear power plants produce radiation as well as radioactive poisons like the Cesium-137, Iodine-131 and Strontium-90 that have been, and continue to be, spewed from the Fukushima plants.  Upon contact with life, these toxins destroy life.

Nuclear power plants—all 443 on the earth today—should be closed and no new ones built, Grossman writes.

Major studies have concluded that safe, clean, renewable energy technologies like solar, wind (now the fastest growing energy source and cheaper than nuclear) and geothermal can provide all the energy the world needs—energy without lethal radioactivity, energy we can live with.

U.S. president pushes nuclear power

Nuclear power creates massive quantities of radioactive waste. There is no way to put it on earth that’s safe. As it leaks into the water over time, it bio-concentrates in the food chains; in the breast milk; in fetuses, that are thousands of times more radiosensitive than are adults. One x-ray to the pregnant abdomen doubles the incidence of leukemia in the child. Over time, nuclear waste will induce epidemics of cancer, leukemia and genetic disease, and random compulsory genetic engineering. Moreover, we are not the only species with genes, of course: it is plants and animals. This is an absolute catastrophe, the likes of which the world has never seen before. —  Dr. Helen Caldicott —

HELEN CALDICOTT still calls nuclear technology “madness,” “an obscene technology.”  She appeared today in debate on the Democracy Now program. This is some of what she said.

“A new report from the New York Academy of Sciences has just translated 5,000 papers from Russian into English. … Up to a million people have already died from Chernobyl, and people will continue to die from cancer for virtually the rest of time.

“What we should know is that a millionth of a gram of plutonium, or less, can induce cancer, or will induce cancer. Each reactor has 250 kilos, or 500 pounds, of plutonium in it. … There’s enough plutonium in these reactors to kill everyone on earth.”

Nuclear

“…If you inhale a millionth of a gram of plutonium, the surrounding cells receive a very, very high dose. Most die within that area, because it’s an alpha emitter. The cells on the periphery remain viable. They mutate, and the regulatory genes are damaged. Years later, that person develops cancer. Now, that’s true for radioactive iodine, that goes to the thyroid; cesium-137, that goes to the brain and muscles; strontium-90 goes to bone, causing bone cancer and leukemia.… “

Coal

“Coal is a deadly substance and we must stop burning it. We must also not go from the global warming frying pan into the nuclear fire. … This is an obscene technology. Seaborg, who discovered plutonium, said it’s the most dangerous substance on earth. Each reactor has 500 pounds of plutonium, lasts for half-a-million years, causing cancer after cancer.”

Renewables

“…There’s enough renewable technology now, right now, which is relatively cheap, to supply the whole of the U.S.’s needs by 2040 without any carbon and any nuclear. We just need to have the politicians to get out of the pockets of the nuclear companies, the coal companies, the oil companies, and start funding renewable energy. Why isn’t there a solar panel on every single house in America, solar hot water systems, windmills everywhere? You know it would increase the GDP and employ hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world. This is the way to go — it’s the prescription for survival.”

Fukushima Daiichi-Chernobyl blow back, propaganda campaign  

On March 25, Dr. Caldicott wrote, “As I write this from Ottawa, two weeks since the earthquake and tsunami and the calamity that has befallen the Fukushima Nuclear Plant No 1, the situation has grown increasingly grave.…

“What we have also seen is a second tsunami of a different kind — a tidal wave of blow-back from the nuclear industry around the world, which has been rocked back on its heels by Fukushima but is now regrouping. There are claims that radiation is good for you; that nuclear power is still the only answer to global warming; and that fears about the safety of nuclear power are unwarranted and panic-stricken.

“…  There are billions and billions of dollars at stake for the nuclear industry, which has … managed to bamboozle governments around the world, much of the press, and many ordinary citizens into believing that nuclear power is green and clean. Nothing could be further from the truth. [However], the industry will not walk away from that money without a fight.”

Glenn Theodore Seaborg (b. 1912 Ishpeming, Michigan, U.S.; d. 1999, Lafayette, California) — American nuclear chemist best known for work on isolating and identifying elements heavier than uranium. With coworkers, Seaborg added (1940–55) 10 new elements that encompass atomic numbers 94–102 and 106, of which plutonium (94) is the best known because of its use as a nuclear explosive and for nuclear power.  Seaborg was chair of the Atomic Energy Commission (1961-1971); the American nuclear-power industry developed rapidly during that time. People of Nuclear Japan

The earthquake and tsunamis that hit northeastern Japan on Friday have left —

4,340 dead • More than 9,000 others still missing

Sheltered • More than 344,000 housed in about 2,400 shelters

District deaths, missing

Miyagi Prefecture (district) • 2,207 confirmed dead, 2,362 missing

Iwate Prefecture (district) • 1,545 confirmed dead, 3,814 missing.

Fukushima • 533 confirmed dead, 2,919 missing.

Kanto region • dozens dead: including 19 in Ibaraki, 7 in Tokyo.

Internally Displaced (IDPs)

Residents near the quake-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant are moving to neighboring Niigata and Yamagata prefectures (districts) to seek shelter.


Government advisory

“Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yukio Edano, says the level of radiation detected about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the quake-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant does not pose an immediate health risk.”

Although people within 20 to 30 kilometers (12-19 miles) of the plant have been instructed to stay indoors, Edano “told reporters on Wednesday that this level of radiation would not have a negative effect on human health even if one worked outdoors in the area for a period of several days.”
