Toward U.S. global Tiananmen?

“America must take a different direction,” says U.S. Representative Dennis John  Kucinich, a consistent voice of nonviolence
Editing by
Carolyn Bennett

This is some of Kucinich's advice on the “us versus them” U.S. foreign policy and the callously malicious assassination justice and global drone warfare.

U.S. foreign relations violence

“I think we need to move this country away from militarism and away from war as an instrument of policy,”  Kucinich says.

“If [service] means anything, it should mean a new direction for America away from war and toward giving our young people a real future where they can use all their talents and ability serving in many different capacities.

Alter this course
Kucinich
 Sheehan
et al.

The global war on terror “has been a pretext for aggressive war.” America must take a “different direction:
  • Rejecting war as an instrument of policy
  • Reconnecting with the nations of the world, so that we can address the real issues that affect security all over the globe and affect our security at home:
  • Getting rid of all nuclear weapons
  • Participating in the chemical and biological weapons conventions, the landmine treaty
  • Joining the International Criminal Court
  • Signing the Kyoto climate change treaty
“The world is waiting for an American president who reaches out in a hand of friendship; who understands this is a complex world, but doesn’t see the world in terms of enemies.

“The minute we have dichotomous thinking, ‘us versus them,’ we lose the opportunity to be able to connect with people.”

Consider far-reaching consequences of U.S. drone war

“These attacks undermine the morals, values and the strategic goals of the United States. The fact that they are conducted with complete impunity and with no accountability threatens to set a dangerous precedent that could unravel the very laws and international standards the U.S. helped to create.

“Even the most ardent supporter of the current President should consider the precedent created by granting the President the power to circumvent the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution.”

Fifth Amendment (Constitution of the United States) breach:

Drone attack
North Waziristan, Pakistan
Afghanistan border
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger;

nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb;

nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use without just compensation.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) has opposed the use of combat drones against suspected terrorists abroad since the first known attack in 2004.

In February 2006, he asked the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency to suspend the use of Predator drones citing the “high toll in innocent civilian life.”

In the 111th Congress, Kucinich sponsored a bill to prohibit the extrajudicial killing of U.S. citizens abroad in response to revelations that the Administration included U.S. citizens on its targeted killing list.

The Congressman currently is leading a growing number of Members of Congress in demanding “the President’s legal justifications for drone strikes.”

American for nonviolence

Dennis John Kucinich (b. October 8, 1946) has been a member of the United States House of Representatives representing Ohio’s 10th congressional district since 1997. He was a candidate for the U.S. presidency in 2004 and 2008; and before entering Congress, Kucinich was Cleveland, Ohio’s 53rd mayor (1977-1979).

In the U.S. Congress, Dennis Kucinich sits on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. In a Congressional career in which he has stood for bringing articles of impeachment against former U.S. President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard (Dick) Cheney; and against the 2003 invasion of Iraq and consistently for nonviolence, for diplomacy, for peace, Kucinich will end his congressional career in January 2013, following a redistricting by Ohio’s Republican-controlled state legislature that abolished the congressional district in which he serves.

Tiananmen Square (Britannica)

Image: A Chinese man temporarily blocking a line of tanks on June 5, 1989, the day after demonstrators were forcibly cleared from Beijing's Tiananmen Square

June 4 incident: A series of protests and demonstrations in China in the spring of 1989 that culminated on the night of June 3–4 with a government crackdown on the demonstrators in Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

Tiananmen Square incident: “From the outset of the incident, the Chinese government’s official stance was to downplay its significance, labeling the protesters ‘counterrevolutionaries’ and minimizing the extent of the military's actions on June 3–4. The government’s count of those killed was 241 (including soldiers), with some 7,000 wounded; most other estimates have put the death toll much higher. In the years since the incident, the government generally has attempted to suppress references to it. Public commemoration of the incident is officially banned. However, the residents of Hong Kong have held an annual vigil on the anniversary of the crackdown, even after Hong Kong reverted to Chinese administration. (Britannica)

U. S. Representatives Lee, Kucinich comment on NATO show

U.S. Reps Lee and Kucinich

Paying for this lying, Cold War relic makes no sense
Excerpt, editing by
Carolyn Bennett

CALIFORNIA CONGRESSWOMAN BARBARA LEE minces her words

“I will remain steadfast in my efforts for an accelerated withdrawal and am heartened that a majority of Democrats and 12 Republicans in the House joined me last week in an effort to end the war [on Afghanistan] now and safely and responsibly bring our troops home.”

Enough is enough, Lee says.
Rep. Barbara Lee, center
Rep. Lynn Woolsey, right
Stand against war on Iraq

“There is no military solution in Afghanistan.”

Approaching ten years of war have cost the deaths of “almost two thousand U.S. troops; more than $530 billion in direct costs.

“Two-thirds of Americans say the war is not worth fighting [and] it is past time for our policy to catch up with the American people.… While NATO leaders and President Obama took an important step toward ending the war, we need to bring our troops home now – not years from now.”

OHIO CONGRESSMAN DENNIS KUCINICH
minces no words

“The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is no benevolent organization [but] a cost-sharing organization that finances aggressive military action.…”

Rep. Dennis Kucinich
Activist Cindy Sheehan
 and others
Endless unlawful war

While hiding behind the claim of providing “for ‘common defense’,” NATO “allows us to wage wars of choice under the guise of international peacekeeping”: the most recent example being the “unconstitutional war on Libya” where NATO operated “under a United Nations mandate of protecting civilians” while in reality “backing one side in a civil war and pursuing a policy of regime change.”

War on Libya’s estimated cost to the United States: $1.1 billion.

Milking the cow

Participation in NATO exacts great financial cost to the United States, Kucinich said. “We contribute the majority of funds for NATO’s common budget — including 25 percent of the military budget”; and we incur significant costs deploying U.S. forces in support of NATO missions.

The United States “contributed more than $1.3 billion to NATO’s military budget between FY 2010 and 2012.”

End the sham, end the show

U.S. Reps Lee and Kucinich
Left, 2nd from right
“NATO is an anachronism,” Kucinich concludes.

“Instead of trying to bolster the organization, we should begin serious discussions to dismantle it.”

Stop the Hemorrhage, Bring $Billions home

Re-reporting, editing by Carolyn Bennett
Some Members of Congress took a stand against more billions for war

Obey of WISCONSIN
To date “we have appropriated over $1 trillion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, more than $700 billion to Iraq and $300 billion for Afghanistan.” Borrowed money has paid for these wars.

“What’s happened with this bill [2010 supplemental appropriations, war funding bill] is a good indication of the tensions and the false choices that we face. The bill started in March as a domestic disaster relief and youth summer jobs bill. The Senate added war funding. Then, we tried to do something about other emergencies this year:
The loss of more than 100,000 teachers’ jobs because of devastating state and local budget cuts
Border security vulnerabilities
A shortfall in Pell grant funding because more students qualify for aid due to the economic recession
“The House tried to fund those emergencies – which were largely paid for with offsets to other programs. Now, true to form, virtually everything we have attempted to do this year to address the economic crisis and emergencies on the domestic side of the ledger has fallen by the wayside.

“On the current course, we will face the same situation again next year and the year following as well.

“Military experts tell us that it will take us at least 10 more years to achieve any acceptable outcome in Afghanistan. We have already been there 9 years ─ I believe it is too high a price to pay.

“To those who say we must pay it because we’re going after Al Qaeda, I would note that Afghanistan is where Al Qaeda USED to be.

“Today, there are fewer than 100 Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, which was publicly confirmed last month by CIA chief Panetta. Al Qaeda has relocated to other countries and regions.

“I have the highest respect and appreciation for our troops who have done everything asked of them. They are being let down by the inability of the governments of Afghanistan and in some instances Pakistan to do their parts.

“I would be willing to support additional war funding – provided that Congress would vote – up or down – explicitly on whether or not to continue this policy after a new National Intelligence Estimate is produced.

“But absent that discipline, I cannot look my constituents in the eye and say that this operation will hurt our enemies more than us.…”

U.S. Representative Dave Obey [7th Congressional District Wisconsin, July 27, 2010, on his decision to vote no on the 2010 supplemental appropriations bill, http://appropriations.house.gov/images/stories/pdf/Obey_Statement_on_the_Sen_Amendment_to_2010_Supplemental_-_7_27_10_2.pdf

Clarke of NEW YORK
“Unfortunately the Senate has decided to short change our school children, teachers and youth while continuing to pay for the fruitless war in Afghanistan. Senators stripped critical House-passed funding provisions from the legislation that would have provided for teacher jobs, summer youth employment, and college Pell grants.

Specifically, the Senate version of the War Supplemental bill stripped from the House-passed investments:
$10 billion for teacher jobs
$1 billion for summer youth employment
$5 billion for Pell grants
$701 million for border security

The bill also excludes critical funding to maintain first responder, police/firefighter positions despite the fundamental need for those jobs not only in Brooklyn but in every community in America.

Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke's Statement on the FY 2010 Supplemental Appropriations Act,
July 27, 2010 7:13 PM Washington, DC- Today, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 4899, the Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2010 with a vote of 308 to 114; Congresswoman Clarke released the statement on her decision to vote against the legislation, http://clarke.house.gov/2010/07/congresswoman-yvette-d-clarkes-statement-on-the-fy-2010-supplemental-appropriations-act.shtml

 Kucinich of OHIO
“Wake Up America.

“How can we solve the world’s problems if we cannot solve our own problems here at home?”

“Don’t we know enough now to begin to demand an end to these wars? Can we ignore the budgetary impact of the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan ─ especially when there are so many pressing needs for jobs, housing, education, health care and retirement security here at home?

“Vote for H. Con. Res 301: The Kucinich-Paul Resolution to Withdraw from Pakistan. Vote Against the $33 Billion Iraq-Afghanistan-Pakistan War Supplemental.” Dennis J. Kucinich, 10th District Ohio, http://kucinich.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=200735

House Congressional Resolution 301: “Directing the President, pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution, to remove the United States Armed Forces from Pakistan” was introduced by Representative Dennis J. Kucinich [OH-10], July 22, 2010. Cosponsors are Representatives Bob Filner [CA-51] and Paul, Ron [TX-14].

Related bill House Resolution 1556: “Providing for consideration of the concurrent resolution (H. Con. Res. 301) directing the President, pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution, to remove the United States Armed Forces from Pakistan” [Sets forth the rule for consideration of the concurrent resolution (H. Con. Res. 301) directing the President, pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution, to remove the United States Armed Forces from Pakistan] introduced by Representative James P. McGovern [MA-3] July 26, 2010.

Woolsey, Lee of CALIFORNIA
“We are running up record deficits with two wars,” California Representative Lynn Woolsey said, costing “the United States in blood and treasure.”

“Let’s not spend another dollar to escalate America’s longest war,” another California Congresswoman pleaded on the House floor. “The costs of this war are too enormous,” Representative Barbara Lee said.

The U.S. House of Representatives approved $58 billion for wars, despite Afghan leaks (Mark Matthews), July 27, 2010, http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/politics&id=7578874
