Seventy-five percent of Americans want substantial numbers of U.S. troops out of Afghanistan by the summer. So do Members of the U.S. Congress Kucinich and Woolsey.
“The cost of the war, both in terms of blood and treasure is unsustainable.
We will renew our struggle to bring U.S. policy in line with American public opinion, and ensure that American lives are not put at risk, Afghan civilians are not put at risk and our ability to address the fiscal needs of America here at home are not put at risk. I look forward to working with Members in a bipartisan way to continue these efforts,” Kucinich said yesterday.
U.S. Representative Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) is author of H. Con. Res. 28, a bipartisan, privileged resolution to direct the President to end the war in Afghanistan by the end of the year.
Cosponsors (12) of the measure were: Rep Capuano, Michael E. [MA-8] - 3/15/2011; Rep Conyers, John, Jr. [MI-14] - 3/9/2011; Rep Ellison, Keith [MN-5] - 3/9/2011; Rep Filner, Bob [CA-51] - 3/9/2011; Rep Honda, Michael M. [CA-15] - 3/9/2011; Rep Jones, Walter B., Jr. [NC-3] - 3/9/2011; Rep Lee, Barbara [CA-9] - 3/9/2011; Rep Nadler, Jerrold [NY-8] - 3/16/2011; Rep Paul, Ron [TX-14] - 3/9/2011; Rep Speier, Jackie [CA-12] - 3/9/2011; Rep Stark, Fortney Pete [CA-13] - 3/9/2011; Rep Woolsey, Lynn C. [CA-6] - 3/9/2011
Though the measure went down on a floor vote of 321 to 93, “illustrating that Congress is unfortunately [still] out of step with the American people on the issue of the Afghanistan war” — the vote also demonstrates something else.
“The number of Members of Congress voting in favor of the resolution to end the Afghanistan war [has grown] appreciably since a similar measure was voted on last year.”
“The U.S. Congress,” Kucinich said, “continues to lag far behind American public opinion on the war in Afghanistan [but] “that vote represents a significant increase in support for ending the war immediately.”
