Journalism in the public interest
The independent not-for-profit Bureau of Investigative
Journalism established in April 2010 “was formed and is funded on the
assumption that investigative journalism is indispensable to democracy.” The first
of its kind in the United Kingdom, TBIJ’s published mission is “to pursue and
encourage journalism in the public interest.”

Drone |
Among TBIJ’s major investigations: Covert Drone War, a full
dataset of all known U.S. drone attacks in Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen ─ an analysis
that has changed the public’s understanding of U.S. actions and revealed that
under [U.S. President Barack] Obama more than 3,000 people, including more than
500 civilians, have been killed by drones. The findings have been published
widely: from the New York Times newspaper to Pakistan’s Dawn; and commented on
in a General Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva; drawn on in the
London High Court; and used in an ACLU filing.
