Pakistan floods |
Some of the world’s biggest humanitarian emergencies are in Pakistan. The country is “scarred by conflict and buffeted by earthquakes and floods” though its “geo-strategic importance” sees the inflow of enormous aid money from a variety of nations.”
Nevertheless, the people suffer.
In 2010, floods affected a fifth of the population, 20 million people. U.N.
Secretary-General Ban-Ki Moon said after inspecting the damage that this flooding
was “one of the worst humanitarian emergencies he had witnessed.”

SOMALIA
Conflict, frequent drought and rampant inflation have made Somalia one
of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Huge numbers of Somalis have been displaced
within the country. The United Nations said more than a million Somalis, many
from the capital, Mogadishu, fled their homes in 2007.

In 2006, Islamists [Islamic Courts’ Union (ICU)] ousted warlords from
most of the south and took control of the capital Mogadishu but Ethiopian
troops, siding with the transitional government, moved in to oust them. The
resulting fighting the Red Cross called the worst in 15 years between
insurgents and Ethiopia-backed government forces. An African peacekeeping force
arrived in 2007 and Somali pirates increa
sed attacks on international shipping
– including a cargo of tanks and two oil supertankers. The North Atlantic
Treaty Organization (NATO) in 2008 deployed naval vessels.
