Dylan at Piccadilly, London
Excerpt, minor edit by Carolyn Bennett
Masters of War
Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planesYou that build all the bombsYou that hide behind wallsYou that hide behind desksI just want you to knowI can see through your masks. But build to destroyYou play with my worldLike it's your little toyYou put a gun in my handAnd you hide from my eyesAnd you turn and run fartherWhen the fast bullets fly.You lie and deceiveA world war can be wonYou want me to believeBut I see through your eyesAnd I see through your brainLike I see through the waterThat runs down my drain. You fasten all the triggersFor the others to fireWhen the death count gets higherYou hide in your mansionsAs young people's bloodFlows out of their bodiesAnd is buried in the mud.
You’ve thrown the worst fearThat can ever be hurledFear to bring childrenInto the worldFor threatening my babyUnborn and unnamedYou ain’t worth the bloodThat runs in your veins. To talk out of turnYou might say that I’m youngYou might say I'm unlearnedBut there's one thing I knowThough I'm younger than youThat even Jesus would neverForgive what you do.Let me ask you one questionIs your money that goodWill it buy you forgivenessDo you think that it couldI think you will findWhen your death takes its tollAll the money you madeWill never buy back your soul.…
Singer, guitarist, songwriter (genres folk, folk rock) Julie
Ann Felix was born (June 14, 1938) in the United States, lives in England, and
has been performing since 1963 under the recording labels Decca, Fontana, RAK, EMI, and
her own label, Remarkable.
For the past few
years, Julie Felix has appeared annually at the Wynd Theater in the heart of historic
Melrose in the Borderlands of Scotland. The Wynd is a small
privately managed professional theater for live performances of all disciplines.
A remarkable career
In 1964, Julie Felix was the first solo folk artist to be
signed to a major British record company. Her first album, ‘Julie Felix,’ and first single, ‘Someday
Soon,’ were released.
In 1968, Felix accepted a television series of 17 shows, directed by Stanley Dorfmann, the
first color series produced by the BBC. The series,
whose guests included Spike Milligan, Richard Harris, Leonard Cohen, Dusty
Springfield, Donovan, and Jimmy Page, was sold to virtually every country in
the world including Russia.
In the 1970s she moved to the EMI label and recorded the
album “Lightning” (producer Del Newman); toured Japan, Australia and New
Zealand; and relocated to Norway where the title track
of her 1976 album “Hot Chocolata” rose to number 1 on the singles chart.
In the early 1980s, she took a break from music and returned for a while to her native California. But in the late 1980s, she participated in a peace march through Central America; and on this dangerous journey, she witnesses the suffering of Latin America’s indigenous peoples and is, in her words, “inspired to return to
singing.”Back home in England’s Hertfordshire, Julie Felix begins singing for Latin American refugees, for women’s and gay rights, for peace projects — including demonstrations against the Persian Gulf War.
She establishes the first
New Age Folk Club, The Magic Messenger, to offer a platform for budding
musicians and poets; and creates her record label, Remarkable Records, that
releases her first album, “Bright Shadows,” after a ten-year hiatus. In
the 1990s, she sets up Goddess Tours, which arranges trips and pilgrimages to
sacred sites throughout Britain, Turkey, France and the U.S. Southwest. The
year 1998 marked her 35th year of professional singing in what she terms a
lifetime “blessed with music, magic and adventure.”
