Protests raging across M. East, E. Africa against U.S., its Allies

Egyptian protest
“Why don’t they like us?”
Re-reporting, editing by Carolyn Bennett

“What is happening in Syria is a heart-rending tragedy but one positive thing to emerge from the suffering is the glaring truth for the world to see: who exactly constitutes the ‘axis of evil.’ An American president’s words are coming back to haunt in a way that he never imagined. What the world is witnessing in Syria is the American axis of evil.

“This truth is obliging us to look back at past decades and to recognize the ultimate source of violence, conflict and wars down through modern history. This truth is compelling us to look at the present with eyes opened as to why poverty, social decay and misery sit alongside unaccountable elite wealth, power and warmongering. The axis of U.S.-led powers that serve a global elite are ransacking their own societies and any other that stands in their way of dominance. This truth can set us free.”
—Finian Cunningham—

Egyptian protest
EGYPT (U.S. allied with previous authoritarian, Mubarak)
Egyptians to Clinton—“Get out Hillary”

Wire reports during the Clinton visit says, “Clinton got a taste of democracy in action when protesters demonstrated outside her five star hotel. Most of the demonstrators were reportedly backers of the old regime of former President Hosni Mubarak, a long-time U.S. who was ally toppled by popular protests last year.

Protesters chanted “Get out Hillary” and carried signs reading “America, Support Liberty Not Theocracy” and “Egypt Majority is not Islamist.”

Hundreds of Egyptian demonstrators have held protests in Cairo against the visit of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The protesters gathered outside the presidential palace on Saturday as Clinton met with Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi “to discuss Egypt’s transition to democracy and plans to provide economic assistance to the country.” (Reuters)

Egyptian soldiers and tanks were positioned outside the U.S. Embassy, which has been the scene of anti-U.S. protests since the popular uprising that toppled former dictator Hosni Mubarak in 2011. This most recent demonstration was reportedly organized by Shabab Maspero, a group of Coptic Christian youth activists.

The United States is in a somewhat delicate position in Egypt, having for three decades strongly supported Mubarak, who worked to repress and to marginalize the Muslim Brotherhood, including at times imprisoning the now-president Morsi.

Saudi Arabia protest
SAUDI ARABIA (U.S. allied with authoritarian)

Protests against the Riyadh regime have increased in number over the past few days in several towns despite the violent crackdown by the security forces.

Since February 2011, protesters have held demonstrations on an almost regular basis in Saudi Arabia, mainly in the Qatif region and Awamiyah in Eastern Province. They have called for the release of all political prisoners, freedom of expression and assembly, and an end to widespread discrimination.

After the November 2011 killing of five protesters and injuring many others by Saudi security forces in Eastern Province, demonstrations have turned into protests against the (U.S-allied) Al Saud regime.

In the past few days, despite the violent crackdown by the security forces, protests increased against the Riyadh regime in several towns. On July 13, Saudi security forces in the town of Awamiyah killed an 18-year-old protester during a demonstration held near a police station in support of Sheikh Nemr. At least 10 female protesters have also been arrested in the city of Buraydah, about 380 kilometers northwest of the capital. Demonstrators have condemned the brutal police crackdown and demand the release of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nemr al-Nemr, who was attacked, injured and arrested on July 8.

Iraqis/Saudis (U.S. allied with authoritarian and occupying)

Iraqi protesters have held a demonstration in the central province of Babil following the disappearance of 55 Iraqi pilgrims in Saudi Arabia. The demonstrators yesterday demanded to know the whereabouts of their fellow countrymen who went missing while on Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia a couple days ago.

Iraq/Kurds/Turkey/Black Gold: Oil (U.S. (U.S. allied and occupying)

In a statement issued today by a representative of the Iraq government “‘Turkey must stop the unauthorized export of oil through its land. Exporting oil from the Kurdistan region to Turkey is illegal.’”

Middle East
East Africa
The Iraqi government and the Kurdish region have been engaged in a dispute over oil exports in the past few months.  The government representative says the situation risks damaging economic relations.

In earlier stories Press TV reported that “ExxonMobil and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) had angered Iraq’s central authorities by signing a large-scale contract in November 2011 without the approval of the Oil Ministry in Baghdad.” Then “Iraqi Oil Minister Abdul Kareem Luaibi said the government had received a letter on March 5 from ExxonMobil stating that the corporation had frozen its deal with the country’s semi-autonomous KRG.

“ExxonMobil is already producing an estimated 370,000 barrels of oil per day from the West Qurna field in southern Iraq, under a service contract negotiated with Baghdad.”

ISRAEL (U.S.-principal Middle East ally)

Activists say that last year’s rallies involving hundreds of thousands of people marching and setting up protest camps across the Occupied Territories, protesting high costs of living and social inequalities and calling for the resignation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Netanyahu have failed to change the situation.

Now “an Israeli protester has set himself on fire during a demonstration in Tel Aviv, saying Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is accountable for the poor condition of people.”

Bahrain protest
BAHRAIN (U.S. allied with authoritarian)
Home of U.S. Fifth Fleet

Bahrainis have been staging demonstrations since mid-February 2011. Initially they called for implementation of political reforms and establishment of a constitutional monarchy. Later, following the dictator’s brutal crackdown on peaceful protests, the demonstrators expanded their demands to outright removal of the ruling Al Khalifa family.

Scores of people have been killed and many others injured in the Saudi-backed campaign of suppression. Bahrainis hold King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa responsible for the deaths and arrests.

A Saturday news update reported, “Bahraini security forces on Saturday attacked the homes of anti-government protesters in the northern town of Bilad al-Qadim as the crackdown on demonstrations continued.

Also on Saturday, reports said, “Young people took to the streets in several villages near Manama and blocked roads [and] the Bahraini regime deported American filmmaker Jen Marlowe following the shooting of a documentary on the violent crackdown on anti-regime protesters.”

PALESTINE (U.S. allied against)
Uprooted Palestinians are at the heart of the conflict in the Middle East: Palestinians uprooted by force of arms, faced immense difficulties have survived, kept alive their history and culture, passed keys of family homes in occupied Palestine from one generation to the next,

Representing the Palestinian people, the Chairman of the Palestinian National Council (PNA) today condemned the Israeli regime’s propaganda against Iran’s peaceful nuclear energy program. He lashed out at arrogant powers for keeping silent on the nuclear arsenals of Israel and noted that the United States and Israel have repeatedly threatened Tehran with the ‘option’ of a military strike based on the allegation that Iran’s nuclear energy program may include a covert military aspect.

According to news reports, Chairman Salim Zanoun’s message to Iran’s Majlis (parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani said, “The Palestinian people express their solidarity with the Islamic Republic of Iran in its attempt to achieve peaceful nuclear energy.” Further, that he was ready “to expand joint cooperation with Iran’s Majlis to adopt necessary measures toward countering the criminal acts of the Israeli regime.”

Pakistan protest
PAKISTAN (U.S. bombed U.S. ally)

In a demonstration organized by Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan’s most powerful Islamic political party, thousands of Pakistanis took to the streets on Sunday in the port city of Karachi, Pakistan’s south (on the coast of the Arabian Sea immediately northwest of the Indus River Delta), to voice their opposition to Islamabad’s decision to reopen NATO supply routes to Afghanistan.

Last week, more than 50,000 Pakistanis held a ‘Long March’ protest from the eastern city of Lahore to the capital. At the end of that march, demonstrators reportedly gathered outside the Pakistani parliament and chanted, among other things, ‘Death to the USA.’

Karachi, Pakistan
Indus River
Arabian Sea
In Sunday’s demonstration, protesters called on Islamabad to immediately close passageways used for the transfer of supplies to the U.S.-led forces deployed in Afghanistan. Jamaat-e-Islami’s president (ameer), Syed Munawar Hasan, told Press TV that Pakistan must revisit its foreign policy. He said, “Our foreign policy should be [an] independent foreign policy; … we should look after our own priorities, not the American priorities.”

From October 2001 to November 2011, Pakistan was used as the main stopover for the supplies headed for the U.S.-led forces occupying Afghanistan. Pakistan blocked the passageways in protest of November 2011 U.S.-led airstrikes on two checkpoints in the country’s northwest that left 24 Pakistani soldiers dead. On July 4, 2012, Islamabad agreed to reopen the crossings after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said “sorry for the losses suffered by the Pakistani military.”

Sunday’s protesters shouted “Stop NATO supplies” and carried a banner reading “Restoration of NATO supply is license to kill Muslims!”

Yemen protest
YEMEN (U.S. allied with authoritarian)

In massive demonstrations in the capital Sana’a and the northern city of Sa’ada on Friday, protesters chanted slogans against the United States, Israel, and Saudi Arabia and demanded that Washington halt the drone attacks in southern Yemen.

The U.S. military has used assassination drones in Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Iraq, and Yemen.

Press TV reports that these thousands of Yemeni demonstrators called for “the expulsion of U.S. Ambassador Gerald M. Feierstein, the resignation of Yemen’s government, and an end to United States and Israeli interference in their country’s internal affairs.”

APROPOS

With great irony or just downright mendacity, a UK-concocted report is apparently claiming that Bahrain’s human rights situation improved in the period of April to June 2012. An analysis called the report, purportedly on human rights in 28 Middle Eastern and North African countries, released by the British Foreign Office “the last example of the British government’s political play with international concepts and norms” in the face of what any news reader knows: that Bahrainis’ peaceful protests to achieve the most basic social and human rights have been harshly put down by the Saudi-backed Al Khalifa regime; and by extension, the United States of America.

Asia
East Africa
How could I omit a place where what goes for news reporting is hearsay based on this, that or the other vested interest, private vendetta or personal agenda?

Author and media commentator and Middle East and East Africa specialist Finian Cunningham has written extensively on international affairs. He was based in Bahrain and witnessed the political upheavals here and the subsequent Saudi-led brutal crackdown against pro-democracy protests. Cunningham was expelled from Bahrain in June 2011 for his critical journalism in which he highlighted many human rights violations by the Western-backed regime.

In a July 10 article, Finian Cunningham contextualizes…

SYRIA (U.S. allied against)

Middle East Asia
Africa

“The people of the world should be very thankful to Syria. For in this agonizing time, the conflict-torn country is revealing an important truth. From the bloodshed, ravages and mayhem that the Syrian people are enduring, the world is empowered to see with crystal clarity a crucial fact — the fact of who and what is the real cause of violence.

“This real cause of violence is not just afflicting Syria, but [it rages] right across the globe.

“Forget about oft-repeated Western admonishments against Islamic extremists, rogue states, corrupt regimes, authoritarian superpowers as being ‘the enemy’ of freedom-loving people.

“It is the American government and its allies who are the real ‘axis of evil’ confronting the world.

Middle East
Russian Federation
“… What is the position of the United States and its allies?

Rejecting any internal Syrian solution, Washington, London, Paris and their allies Turkey and the Persian Gulf Arab monarchies have vowed to increase financial and material support for the armed groups that have waged a campaign of terrorist subversion over the past 16 months.

“The U.S.-led axis insists that Syrian President Bashar Al Assad must go immediately at their say-so. Speaking like a Mafia moll, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that Russia and China will be made to ‘pay a price’ for their (reasonable) position. Clinton then made the sinister warning that Assad’s ‘days are numbered’ and that if a political transition does not occur on American terms then the Syrian people face ‘a catastrophic assault that would be very dangerous not only to Syria, but to the region.’

“That is the mindset and language of a fascist rogue state.
What is happening in Syria is a heart-rending tragedy but one positive thing to emerge from the suffering is the glaring truth for the world to see: who exactly constitutes the ‘axis of evil.’ An American president’s words are coming back to haunt in a way that he never imagined. What the world is witnessing in Syria is the American axis of evil.
This truth is obliging us to look back at past decades and to recognize the ultimate source of violence, conflict and wars down through modern history. This truth is compelling us to look at the present with eyes opened as to why poverty, social decay and misery sit alongside unaccountable elite wealth, power and warmongering. The axis of U.S.-led powers that serve a global elite are ransacking their own societies and any other that stands in their way of dominance. This truth can set us free.

Presidential candidate Stein fleshes out “Green New Deal” for America

Today, as the Greens open their national convention in Baltimore, Jill Stein and vice presidential running mate Cheri Honkala appeared on the Democracy Now program.
Editing by Carolyn Bennett

Facing Crisis

Much needs to be done, Stein said on Democracy Now. “The American people are in crisis: facing loss of jobs and homes, loss of decent wages and affordable healthcare. A generation of students has effectively become indentured servants as high unemployment renders them unable to repay their debt. Civil liberties are under attack. The climate is in serious jeopardy.

“We need big solutions, not solutions around the margins. We really need to end unemployment. We need to put 25 million people back to work with good-paying jobs.”

The Green New Deal Stein fleshes out

The Green New Deal is designed to create a whole spectrum of jobs and to jump-start this program at the cost of the first stimulus package implemented by the previous (that is, current) administration.

But instead of creating a small dent in the problem, she said, “we can really fix the problem and end to unemployment in this country.”

A Green New Deal modeled on the New Deal that helped get us out of the Great Depression means “Instead of using the money that went into the stimulus package, for example, of 2009 (some $700 billion) … more than half of which basically went to corporate subsidies and tax breaks, which don’t create jobs — the money [will be] used for—
Direct job creation
Community-based jobs in small businesses and worker cooperatives
Public services and public works

“We [will] also create the social jobs that our communities need: Put 300,000 teachers back to work and the nurses and day care after school, affordable housing construction, prevention of and rehabilitation for violence and drug abuse. The money would go to communities to create the kinds of jobs they need to become sustainable, not only economically; but also socially and ecologically.

“We’re talking about jobs in the green economy—
Clean manufacturing
Local, organic agriculture
Public transportation
Clean, renewable energy jobs in which we can put people to work right now, in places that need them

In the green energy economy, we make wars for oil obsolete and put an end to the unfolding climate crisis.

The Green New Deal is how you can do it, Stein said. “It’s not rocket science. We’ve done it before and it actually works.”

In her Wednesday speech at the National Press Club in which she introduced her running mate Cheri Honkala, Jill Stein said:

“Our campaign is here to change that breaking point into a tipping point, to begin taking back the promise of our democracy and the peaceful, just, green future that we deserve and that is within our reach.”

Sources and notes

“Green New Deal: Organizer, Physician Jill Stein Poised to Win Green Party’s Presidential Nomination — As the corporate media covers every move made by Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney and Democratic incumbent Barack Obama, we go to Baltimore to cover the Green Party 2012 National Convention.

“‘We need big solutions, you know, not solutions around the margins. We really need to end unemployment. We need to put 25 million people back to work with good-paying jobs,’ says presumptive presidential nominee Dr. Jill Stein, who is running on a platform called ‘the Green New Deal’ that emphasizes economic justice, tough financial regulation, the repeal of Citizens United and a transition to a ‘green economy.’

“The Green Party expects to be on the 2012 ballot in at least 45 states and plans to spend approximately $1 million on its campaign.

“Stein is the party’s first candidate to independently qualify for federal matching funds, a milestone for this 11-year-old third party.” July 13, 2012, http://www.democracynow.org/2012/7/13/green_new_deal_organizer_physician_jill

Greens choose veteran Poor People’s Economic Human Rights leader Chris Honkala

2012 Green Party Vice President with Jill Stein for President
Compiled and edited by
Carolyn Bennett
We do not seek pity. We seek power that ends human rights conditions threatening all people. Violations of economic human rights deny the birthright to Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness reads the mission of the organization founded by Cheri Honkala.
The woman chosen for vice president by Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein has been called “a speaker with a powerful message about ending poverty in America.”

Who is she?

Minnesota-born Pennsylvanian Cheri Honkala is a leading advocate for human rights who speaks worldwide about the struggle against poverty in the United States and the denial of basic economic human rights. She has brought life stories and voices of America’s poor and homeless people to the United Nations Human Rights Commission/Council, to the World Social Forum, and to other international bodies.

Cheri Honkala is National Coordinator for the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign.

Listed among her efforts, in addition working with the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign, are speaking to 148 governments at the United Nations about ending poverty in America; leading a March of the Americas, the World Summit of the Poor, and a 125-mile march of homeless and poor from the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia to the United Nations in protest of welfare reform and poverty as a violation of economic human rights.

Cheri Honkala has served on the Urban-Rural Mission, the Reproductive Health Technologies Project, the Pennsylvanians for Choice, the Alliance of Native Americans, and the Annie Smart Leadership Development boards of directors, among others. She refused to sign the Pennsylvania Agreement of Mutual responsibility (AMR on behalf of all welfare recipients on the grounds that without adequate guarantees of childcare, healthcare, and jobs at a living wage, the AMR is an unfair contract). Pennsylvania newspapers have named her among “the region’s 100 most powerful” and “Woman of the Year.”

Cheri Honkala is an American anti-poverty advocate, founder of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union (KWRU) and founder of the National Coordinator of the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign.

In June of 1977, Cheri Honkala and other members of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union organized the “‘March for Our Lives’ from the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia to United Nations in New York to protest human rights violations in the United States caused by welfare reform.”

In 2011, Honkala was the Green Party candidate for Sheriff of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This coming Saturday, Green Party 2012 presidential candidate Jill Stein and Cheri Honkala are expected to be officially nominated at the Green Party national convention in Baltimore, Maryland.

What is Honkala’s
Poor People’s Economic Rights Campaign?

The Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign is a rising movement “that unites the poor across color lines,” says the organization’s published mission.

“Poverty afflicts Americans of all colors. Every day more and more of us are downsized and impoverished.

“We share a common interest in uniting against the prevailing conditions and around our vision of a society where we all have the right to health care, housing, living wage jobs, and access to quality primary, secondary, and higher education.

“The Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign includes people of many backgrounds: mothers, fathers, children, and grandparents; the unemployed, the working poor, the downsized, the homeless, the victims of welfare reform and NAFTA, the cast-asides of the new economy; we are social workers, religious leaders, labor leaders, artists, lawyers, and other people of conscience. We are young and old. We live in rural areas and in urban centers.”

Anchored in
Universal Declaration of Human Rights

“We are committed to uniting the poor as the leadership base for a broad movement to abolish poverty everywhere and forever. We work to accomplish this by promoting economic human rights as anchored in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Articles 23, 25, and 26. These articles provide for the human right to housing, health care, a living-wage job, and education.

Universal
Declaration of Human Rights
1948
Eleanor Roosevelt
“The founding creed of the United States of America (the 1776 Declaration of Independence proclaiming equally the 'unalienable rights') asserting Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness inspired the formulation of rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights signed by the United States in 1948. However, while it claims to defend human rights, the United States of America has consistently ignored and undermined the global consensus on economic human rights.”

Full implementation of these rights means that “our country, the richest, most powerful in the world, would be living out the true meaning of its creed.

“We do not seek pity. We do seek power to end conditions that threaten all of us with economic human rights violations denying us our birthright to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

Biographer Anne Roth wrote about Cheri Honkala: “What she is fighting for seems to be a chance for our entire nation’s poor to meet the basic needs for survival.
This is not a fight for a bigger handout, but a fight for a realistic opportunity to exist under the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

KWRU

The Kensington Welfare Rights Union is a progressive social justice, political action, and advocacy group of, by, and for the poor and homeless operating out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and led by Galen Tyler. The group was formed in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood in April of 1991.

KWRU is a part of the national organization, the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign, a coalition of grassroots organizations, community groups, and non-profit organizations committed to uniting the poor across color lines as the leadership base for a broad movement to abolish poverty. KWRU is also a member of the steering committee of the A.N.S.W.E.R. coalition. The KWRU was written about in David Zucchino’s book Myth of the Welfare Queen. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kensington_Welfare_Rights_Union

Myth of the Welfare Queen

A reviewer of David Zucchino’s 1999 work said the author had “written an unsentimental yet powerful narrative describing life in the trenches of the welfare system,” a recounting that “reminds us that we cannot disregard the urgency of poverty [because] it affects all of us regardless of economic situation or anyone’s opinion of welfare recipients.”

“Zucchino’s attempt to deconstruct the myth of the welfare queen exposes many unsavory details about life below the poverty line: trash-picking, sex for money, children left in charge of other children.

“This book invites readers step into the shoes of a desperately poor person, leaving behind moral judgments and uninformed opinions.”

The Myth of the Welfare Queens “is a story of two women on welfare, a chronicle of daily life with Cheri Honkala, a welfare recipient and activist, and Odessa Williams a welfare grandmother.”

“What does ‘winning’ mean” IT Times asks Fletcher, Hirsch, Stein

“Winning” means securing a place on the platform, on air, at tables of power and influence, to contribute ideas equally, uncensored, unencumbered by overt or subliminal, insidious mandate to pander to PAC, corporate media, lobbyist, campaign-contributor paymasters

Re-reporting, editing by Carolyn Bennett

Alternative: “Power of a people’s movement impassioned by the issues.”

Jill Stein

A 2012 candidate for the U.S. presidency, Jill Stein is a Midwest born-New England physician, environmentalist and health expert, political leader, activist and writer who two years ago, along with her routine responsibilities, was active in implementing the Massachusetts “Secure Green Future” ballot initiative that earned high percentage points in voter returns. The measure called on legislators to accelerate efforts to make development of green jobs a priority and move the State economy to renewable energy.

Leader in politics and public health
In 2002, Jill Stein ran for the office of Governor of Massachusetts under the Green-Rainbow Party banner. In 2003 through 2006, she represented Greens or Green ideals in cofounding the Massachusetts Coalition for Healthy Communities, a non-profit organization addressing a variety of issues that are important to the health and well-being of Massachusetts communities: health care, local green economies, grassroots democracy. She represented the Green-Rainbow Party in  races for State Representative (2004) and for Secretary of State (2006), garnering the greatest number of total votes ever received by a Green-Rainbow candidate.

Jill Stein’s environmental advocacy “as a human health issue” began in 1998 “when she realized that politicians were failing to take action to protect children from the toxic threats emerging from current science.” Over the years, she has provided services to parents, teachers, community groups and a Native American group seeking to protect their communities from toxic exposure. She has offered expert advice on television programs and testified before numerous legislative panels and local and state governmental bodies. Her testimony on the effects of mercury and dioxin contamination from the burning of waste helped preserve the Massachusetts moratorium on new trash incinerator construction in the state.

She has been on Massachusetts and national boards of directors of the Physicians for Social Responsibility; and has won the Clean Water Action’s award, Not in Anyone’s Backyard Award, the Children’s Health Hero Award, and the Toxic Action Center’s Citizen Award, among others.

Documentation
Jill Stein is coauthor of two widely-praised reports aimed at promoting green local economies, sustainable agriculture, clean power, and freedom from toxic threats: “In Harm’s Way: Toxic Threats to Child Development (2000, translated into four languages and used worldwide); and Environmental Threats to Healthy Aging (2009).

Her “Healthy People, Healthy Planet” teaching program makes clear the critical connections of human health, climate security, and green economic revitalization. Her body of work has been presented at government, public health and medical conferences, and has been used to improve public policy.

Personal
Born in Chicago, raised in suburban Highland Park, Illinois, Jill Stein took her academic credentials at Harvard College (1973) and Harvard Medical School (1979). She is married and a mother living in Massachusetts. http://www.jillstein.org/bio

Bill Fletcher

Bill Fletcher Jr is board chair of the International Labor Rights Forum, executive editor of The Black Commentator and founder of the Center for Labor Renewal. Fletcher is a longtime labor, racial justice and international activist; and is immediate past president of TransAfrica Forum, a national non-profit organization organizing, educating and advocating for policies in favor of the peoples of Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. Fletcher is also a founder of the Black Radical Congress and is a Senior Scholar for the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C.

Bill Fletcher is coauthor (with Fernando Gapasin) of Solidarity Divided: the Crisis in Organized Labor and a New Path toward Social Justice. He is a former vice president of the International Trade Union Development Programs for the George Meany Center of the AFL-CIO. Before working with the George Meany Center, Fletcher was education director and later assistant to the president of the AFL-CIO, http://www.opednews.com/Podcast/Bill-Fletcher-activism-02-by-Rob-Kall-100218-294.html

Michael Hirsch

Michael Hirsch is a labor writer on the staff of the New York Teacher, a newspaper of the United Federation of Teachers.

In These Times staff writer Bhaskar Sunkara led the July 4 interview with this frame:

“Every four years, the election season finds many on the political Left agonizing over whether to make a pragmatic choice and vote for the better of the two major-party candidates—or to vote for an individual who most closely matches their political principles, ‘regardless of that campaign’s relevancy.’

“In These Times convened three progressive voices to debate how the Left should be organizing this election cycle.”

Fletcher, Hirsch, Stein’s responses to In These Times

Bill Fletcher: “The Democrats and the Republicans are fundamentally corporate parties—everyone knows that. The Republicans have now become much more consolidated as a hard-right coalition. Democrats are not as consolidated at the broad level but have embraced neo-liberalism at the top.

“Part of the problem is that within the Democratic Party constituency, there is a very poorly organized progressive bloc. I’m not just talking about the Congressional Progressive Caucus. The broad progressive forces that will tend to vote Democratic do not have a very clear vision, organization and strategy.

More than one
More than two
Constitutes Electoral Choice
“So we have repeatedly been in a trap of every four years, people as individuals—sometimes as organizations—start an electoral campaign, get people engaged in it, and at the end of the campaign, nothing changes.

“Without any discussion about strategy, where are we going in the next five to 10 years?”

Jill Stein: Because [U.S. President] Barack Obama has adopted so many of the positions of [former president] George W. Bush and in fact gone beyond him, it is hard to discern the impact of one party over the other.

“Young people, who are always the engine of real change and the engine of social movements, have been left behind by all parties in the political establishment.

Nine political parties
“The young have a very bleak future right now and they are hungry for a vehicle that is really principled and has a broad and comprehensive strategy, vision, agenda and game plan.”

Bringing into the Green Party labor, people of color, key constituencies of the Left, the Green Party is working to ensure placement on the ballot in 42 to 48 states. An important, necessary focus of the Greens “is our infrastructure and to make sure we are a visible part of the discussion—the ultimate stake in this election, in terms of impact on policy outcomes and on social movements.”

From Democratic Party candidates, we’ve seen a consistent folding to the money that sponsors them.

The Greens do not accept corporate campaign contributions. We do not accept money from lobbyists and are therefore insulated from those pressures. “We have nothing but the power of a people’s movement and of volunteers and of people who are impassioned by the issues.”

Michael Hirsch: “The way Obama has run his administration has been deadly to our class—deadly—and the Left’s got to say that. Will we be in any better position in 2012, after the election, than we were in 2008?

“The question is not just how we vote; it is how we organize.”
