Exemptional Exceptionalism
A Delusional people and nation
Excerpt, minor edit by Carolyn Bennett

“In [U.S. President Barack] Obama’s reinterpretation of World War Two the joint struggle with the Soviets to defeat Hitler’s European empire became a grand American crusade for democracy, human rights, multiculturalism and immigration,” Nebojsa Malic continues.
Is that why less than 50 years after fighting Hitler, the U.S. was helping his allies in the Balkans?
Why Washington repeated the Munich travesty seventy years later, even while trumpeting ‘No more Munichs!’ to justify its belligerence around the world?
Why sixty years after Hitler attacked Poland, NATO attacked Yugoslavia without provocation or cause?
And why ignorant Anglo-American leaders accuse Russia (!) of ‘acting like Hitler,’ even as they back Hitlerites in Ukraine?

“After all that, the Emperor has the sheer gall to say the ‘United States of America is [sic] and will remain the greatest force for freedom the world has ever known.’ Wow.…

“What is one to make of this insistence on American exceptionalism (and exemptionalism), which has long since stopped bordering on delusional and crossed right over into Behind-the-Looking-Glass land?

“…… Those who landed on the beaches of Normandy in June 1944 weren’t fighting and dying for an American Empire, or the world revolution – but for an America defined by those who rebelled against King George and absolutist monarchy.

“Yet, here their country is, seven decades later ── a carnival of rust, going broke on a worldwide crusade to spread ‘democracy,’ allied with the Nazis and their heirs, being ruled by pen and by phone, and being subjected to chicken hawks croaking, ‘Empire today, Empire tomorrow, Empire forever!’”

Nebojsa Malic's words are so poignantly powerful in truth, they need no further comment.

A kind of journalism that serves the public

Journalism
is printing
what someone else
does not want printed
 Greenwald continues
Excerpt, editing for TIN by Carolyn Bennett

From part two of a two-part Democracy Now interview with the author of No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State.

Glenn Greenwald says, “We tried to do … reporting in the public service.”

He says the journalism he advocates and engages in “is controversial among a large klatch of … ‘establishment’ journalists” as there exists “an unwritten set of rules that govern how you [journalists] are supposed to speak and what you’re supposed to do,” which he says he consciously reject[s] and set[s] out to violate because … [these rules] are corrupting.” Continuing, Greenwald says he has been

…a very vociferous critic of how the establishment media in the United States conducts itself, and that’s created a lot of animosity even before the Edward Snowden story … [and his reporting and the way he tries] to do journalism [has been] the target of [their] criticism.

oes the public hear meaningfully and appreciate journalism in service to the public? Greenwald draws on his particular experience covering issues of concern in his latest work.

Working on surveillance issues for eight years, he says, “I know the difficulty of trying to induce large numbers of people to pay attention and care about [these issues] because it’s a little bit more ethereal and abstract, and even a little bit remote, than … your inability to pay bills or to get health insurance for your children.

“The ability we’ve had to take [actual] documents and show them to people ─ as opposed to just reporting on [the issues] and making them rely on what we’re saying ─ has been indispensable in engaging the public.

“It really shows the value of whistleblowing, not just for exposing specific programs; but for strengthening democracy and for the debate that is necessary to support democracy.”

Filmmaker Laura Poitras and Glenn Greenwald, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, were the journalists who first met Edward Snowden in Hong Kong in June of last year.

Global Threat of OUTLAW NATION

Ours is an outlaw nation that weakens countries, vital structures and valid traditions, the world's peoples including the USA
Excerpt, edited for TIN, ending comment by Carolyn Bennett

Today with Democracy Now's Amy Goodman, the author, journalist and activist Glenn Greenwald discusses content from his latest work concerning the United States (U.S. Government's) National 'Security' Agency's global, lawless reach.

INVASION, OCCUPATION

“…You’re not just talking about one country; you’re talking about hundreds of millions, probably billions of people around the world who use these companies. …” NSA invaded major systems at home and abroad, spying on Muslims in Muslim countries and Americans within the USA. ● “PRISM” program uncovered showed “Facebook and Google and Yahoo and Skype and Microsoft directly cooperating with the NSA in all sorts of extensive ways to ensure easy NSA access to the communications that take place through those companies” ● “unlike the NSA story of 2005 that involved AT&T and Sprint and Verizon, U.S. domestic telephone companies; these Internet companies are the primary means by which the entire ‘First World’ communicates.”  Moreover, in both the developed and developing world … "hundreds of millions, probably billions of people around the world use these companies. …”

President of
the Federative Republic of Brazil
H. E. Dilma Rousseff
LIES, SECRECY, STEALING FOR COMMERCIAL GAIN

The U.S. government, though it has vehemently denied engagement “in economic spying,” it has done; and though the U.S. has “accused other countries, particularly the China, of engaging in economic spying,” the U.S. does this. Numerous uncovered documents show e.g., U.S. “TARGETING the largest Brazilian oil company, Petrobras, that funds huge numbers of Brazilian social programs; ● U.S. SPYING on economic conferences that take place in various regions throughout the world that are designed to negotiate financial treaties; ● U.S. SPYING on the World Bank and the IMF and the SWIFT banking system, …” ● spying obviously “for economic gain.”

BREACH OF NATIONS’ SOVEREIGNTY

“Countries that are democratically elected, for the most part; allies of the United States; buildings that are supposed to be sacred.… ● Consulates, embassies in the United States that are a crucial part of diplomacy, of the ability of nations to communicate with one another and have diplomatic relations… [evidence] shows that for pretty much every single one of these buildings NSA has invaded the communication systems and is collecting the information that take place, even with some really extreme tactics” such as “an air gap computer, a computer that is used that never connects to the Internet [the only way to … ‘jump the air gap,’ to actually invade those computers, is to physically go into the computer itself and implant a surveillance device within it covertly.] … ● NSA is doing even this kind of invasive, stealth surveillance on its allies in their own consulates and embassies, even breaking into their offices and implanting surveillance devices within the machine. ● These are the extreme lengths to which the National 'Security' Agency goes in spying that has always been deemed essentially illegitimate.”

Source: May 13, 2014, Democracy Now Part 1 of a 2-part discussion with Glenn Greenwald, “‘Collect It All’: Glenn Greenwald on NSA Bugging Tech Hardware, Economic Espionage & Spying on UN,” http://www.democracynow.org/2014/5/13/collect_it_all_glenn_greenwald_on

I
f law is caprice or expediency; if freedom is plutocrats’ (or anybody's) doing whatever the hell they want to do; if law is whatever politicians and or their allies say it is ─ then we have come to a place and state far worse than the jungle, because in the jungle are boundaries, laws by which all inhabitants are governed.

It is ludicrous to believe, “I’ve done nothing wrong so I don’t care if they spy on me.” Such belief and oft-stated idiocy or learned ignorance suggests a mindless “trust” in that which no longer is ─ if indeed it ever was ─ worthy of trust.

Stop spying rally
Stop spying rally
The fact of the matter is (a) they have (government has) no business spying on you (or me, on anyone domestic or international) without due cause under clearly established and impartial law; and (b) as surely as they (government and their “partners” and or “clients”) can spy on information and use it as they see fit, they can also plant information and alter information to say whatever they want it to say and, at any given time and circumstance, use it for whatever purposes they choose.

To rein in this outlaw nation, to end the lawlessness, law breakers must be stopped and they must be brought to stand publicly before the people’s bar of impartial justice.

Deliberately disastrous U.S. Anti-Russia Rhetoric

Concerns about American recklessness in talk and actions
Editing by Carolyn Bennett

One voice does not make for truth or understanding but for a tyranny of the few; and of the masses a learned ignorance, a deliberate, oblivious, dangerous ignorance.

This morning I has listening to one of the “oldies” radio stations in my geographical area and had finally had enough from a relatively new (and inappropriate) addition to the station’s music (non-music) lineup, the demonizing pejorative propagandistic commentary of Tom Brokaw; and had to ask the station to ditch the gentlemen. For me, today’s commentary was right over the top in its bashing of the Russian Federation’s head of state Vladimir Putin, calling him what American irresponsible pundits and flacks in the past and present have called leaders such as Manuel Noriega, Saddam Hussein, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Bashar al-Assad, Muammar al- Qaddafi and others ─ “Strongman.” Having framed his subject disparagingly, Brokaw was off on the usual corporate media/government rant. My feedback to “Oldies Rochester” dot com suggested that
Whether or not the actions or styles of leadership of other heads of state are acceptable to us (or expedient in the moment), whether or not we like certain leaders is irrelevant.
We Americans have no moral or legal standing for condemning any other nations and peoples; and even if we did, this kind of demonizing (immature, deliberately crude) behavior dirties relations among peoples and nations, including the USA.
Then I came across like thinkers. I am not alone in my concerns about the quality and character of U.S. relations with the world; and related to that, the accuracy and unbiased nature of information Americans receive and their depth of knowledge and understanding of other countries and peoples and our connections with them.

Earlier this year during the Winter Games in Sochi, journalist Peter Lavelle was speaking on RT’s Op-Edge program. This is some of what he said: “The level of journalistic malpractice committed against Russia blinds Western electorates, poisons public opinion, and emboldens the reckless political class.… Cheap shots, lazy reporting and maniacal commentary are a form of entertainment served up by Western mainstream media.
… After the incessant demonization Russia gets from mainstream media, it is quite remarkable that the Kremlin continues to work closely with the West on issues that impact geopolitical stability ─ Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, nuclear proliferation, terrorist threats, food security, and the narcotics trade.
Western publics rarely, if ever, learn about these kinds cooperation from their media. This is truly regrettable.
A few days ago, in  light of U.S. threats and bashing surrounding the Ukrainian conflict, author and commentator Stephen Lendman continued to raise concerns about the character of U.S. foreign relations, citing the recklessness in U.S. rhetoric. “Reckless comments heighten tensions,” Lendman wrote. “They do so irresponsibly. Rhetoric risks becoming policy…. Great conflicts start this way.… Containing Russia has been the longstanding policy, reflecting U.S. hegemonic ambitions.…

“In January, Pentagon officials raised concerns about Russian ground-launched cruise missile tests [but they] are silent about their own naked aggression,” which has been endless ─ “killing millions” of people ─ in multiple theaters in the post-9/11 period. “Russia,” Lendman says, “is a powerful force for peace … up against a belligerent monster … headquartered in Washington.…” Its priorities: “Eliminating a major rival [Russia]. Marginalizing, weakening, isolating, and co-opting [Russia].Though “Escalated tensions risk belligerent East/West confrontation, Lendman writes,
Whenever Washington wages war or plans one, media scoundrels march in lockstep. They regurgitate official propaganda ad nauseam, substituting lies for truth.
[Reckless rhetoric] is relentless. It persists daily. Big Lies drown out truth.

Clear Channel Communications dominates what we hear over “public” airwaves.  Wikipedia notes 448 stations outside the Top 100 DMA (designated market area) markets plus another 91 stations for sale which may or may not be in the top 100 DMAs. The TV stations formerly owned by Clear Channel were sold to Providence Equity Partners, a private equity firm, on April 23, 2007, with the deal closing in late November 2007. 185 radio stations were to have been sold to GoodRadio.TV LLC until the sale fell apart over financing. and another 177 stations have been sold to other entities. Another 201 stations are up for sale. DMA:  a media market, broadcast market, media region, designated market area (DMA), television market area, or simply market is a region where the population can receive the same (or similar) television and radio station offerings, and may also include other types of media including newspapers and Internet content. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_broadcast_stations_owned_by_Clear_Channel

Wasteful wedge: aspiring to relic that doesn't fit

Cons from “Pro-Con Gay Marriage”
Excerpts, minor edits by Carolyn Bennett

Ideas, sensible reasoning, thoughtful reflections interest me. I think these are.

Antiwar dot com Editorial Director Justin Raimondo, August 4, 2011:

[I]f ‘gay pride’ means anything, it means not wanting, needing, or seeking any sort of acceptance, except self-acceptance.

Marriage is a social institution designed by heterosexuals for heterosexuals: why should gay people settle for their cast-off hand-me-downs?

McGill Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law Founding Director Margaret A. Somerville, April 29, 2003:

[Though it] is … argued by those advocating same-sex marriage that excluding same-sex couples from marriage is the same act of discrimination as prohibiting interracial marriage, [the latter] which has rightly been recognized as a serious breach of human rights ─ the argument is incorrect.

An interracial marriage between a man and a woman symbolizes the procreative relationship [and] its prohibition is based on racial discrimination, which is wrong.…

Not extending the definition of marriage to include same-sex couples is not based on the sexual orientation of the partners but on the absence of a feature of their relationship which is an essential feature of marriage.

National Organization for Marriage President Maggie Gallagher [Srivastav], May 22, 2009:

Same-sex unions are not marriages…

That’s Revolting!: Queer Strategies for Resisting Assimilation author Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore, May 27, 2008:

...[T]he push for gay marriage has shifted advocacy away from essential services like HIV education, AIDS health care, drug treatment, domestic violence prevention, and homeless care -- all crucial needs for far more queers than marriage could ever be. And this pattern will undoubtedly continue, as millions of dollars will be spent fighting an anti-gay marriage constitutional amendment … at a time when social services are being scrapped across the country, and especially in California.

The spectacle around gay marriage draws attention away from critical issues -- like ending U.S. wars on Iraq and Afghanistan, stopping massive Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids across the country, and challenging the never-ending assault on anyone living outside of conventional norms.

While many straight people are reaping the benefits of gay liberation and discovering new ways of loving, lusting for and caring for one another, the gay marriage movement is busy fighting for a 1950s model of white-picket fence ‘we’re just like you’ normalcy. And that’s no reason to celebrate.

Andrey Klimov
Paul Abelsky said in his review of Andrey Klimov’s A Russian MP: The Insider’s Notes, “The book’s real contribution is an attempt to articulate both Russia’s distinctive historical path and to encourage the country’s citizens to take responsibility for its future. Ultimately, the working model Klimov proposes hinges on mobilizing a national consensus, a consolidation of the federal center and the regions, the political elite and other classes. Only this attitude will help Russia grow more introspective, enabling it to face the century’s new challenges.” He came of age “during Perestroika”, entered politics in 1990, and is currently a member of Russia’s parliament, the State Duma. Andrey Klimov was trained as an economist.
