World’s bully must be brought before ICC

f Africa’s leaders can be brought – and with good reason, well-founded reasons, they should be brought − before the International Criminal Court in The Hague; so must the United States’ public officials and leaders be brought before the International Criminal Court notwithstanding the fact that the U.S. has failed to take membership in this international process.

Time and again U.S. violent aggression, bullying, extrajudicial abductions and killings have raised the ire of people across the world; yet this global violence has continued with impunity. Last week, the Obama government ordered U.S. commando raids on to the sovereign lands of Libya and Somalia as part of the United States’ politically motivated, expediently executed “War on Terror” and “terrorists”, acts which are clearly to any sane person in breach of both U. S. laws and international laws.

 

Responding to these flagrant acts of aggression, Russia’s foreign minister referenced “good” terrorists and “bad” terrorists – as if in a world in which people and nations operated under the rule of law there could be such nonsensical distinctions. 

The root cause of ten years’ failure to finalize a draft of the comprehensive global convention on counterterrorism, Sergey Lavrov said, lies within the belief of some people that

…those who use terror as the means to achieve their political goals can’t be called terrorists because they are ‘freedom fighters’ −

“We believe,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in interview with RT, “that this [the latest U.S. aggression in Libya and Somalia] is not the way you handle international relations.

“It is not the way you fight criminals ─ even before you prove that they are criminals, before they can testify to any court of law.”

Lavrov said “We would be very much in favor of making sure that we all fight terrorism

…in accordance with our national law ─ if it is our territory ─ and in accordance with international law …

The Foreign Minister recalled “similar dubious cases involving Russian citizens Bout and Yaroshenko, both of whom were ‘basically kidnapped’ by U.S. agents from Thailand and Liberia in violation of local law; and then given big prison sentences for ‘not sufficiently proved’ criminal intent.

Lavrov concluded with words that are abundantly clear to any sane person: “You cannot strengthen the law by violating the law.”

In addition to his native language, Lavrov speaks English, French, and Sinhala.

In court papers filed August 22, 2013, Global Research reports, “the [Obama government’s] United States Department of Justice requested that George W. Bush, Richard Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice and Paul Wolfowitz be granted procedural immunity in a case alleging that they planned and waged the Iraq War in violation of international law.

Plaintiff Sundus Shaker Saleh, an Iraqi single mother and refugee now living in Jordan, filed a complaint in March 2013 in San Francisco federal court alleging that the planning and waging of the war constituted a ‘crime of aggression’ against Iraq, a legal theory that was used by the Nuremberg Tribunal to convict Nazi war criminals after World War II.

‘The DOJ claims that in planning and waging the Iraq War, ex-President Bush and key members of his Administration were acting within the legitimate scope of their employment and are thus immune from suit,’ chief counsel Inder Comar of Comar Law said.

The ‘Westfall Act certification,’ submitted pursuant to the Westfall Act of 1988, permits the Attorney General, at his or her discretion, to substitute the United States as the defendant and essentially grant absolute immunity to government employees for actions taken within the scope of their employment.

• Richard Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz began planning the Iraq War in 1998 through their involvement with the ‘Project for the New American Century,’ a Washington DC non-profit that advocated for the military overthrow of Saddam Hussein. 

• Once they came to power, Saleh alleges that Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz convinced other Bush officials to invade Iraq by using 9/11 as an excuse to mislead and scare the American public into supporting a war. 

• Finally, she claims that the United States failed to obtain United Nations approval prior to the invasion, rendering the invasion illegal and an act of impermissible aggression.

U.S. President George W. Bush demanded that the Taliban hand over Osama bin Laden and expel the al-Qaeda [now the U.S. reportedly allies with al-Qaeda against the government of Syria] network which was supporting the Taliban in its war with the Afghan Northern Alliance [the U.S. previously also allied with the Northern Alliance].

The Taliban [allegedly] recommended that bin Laden leave the country… but declined to extradite him without evidence of his involvement in the 9/11 attacks.

he United States refused to negotiate and launched ‘Operation Enduring Freedom’ against the people of Afghanistan on October 7, 2001. The U.S. aggression was joined by the United Kingdom and later by Germany and other western allies in attacking the Taliban and al-Qaeda forces in conjunction with the Northern Alliance.

“The War in Afghanistan (2001–present) refers,” in the phrasing of a Wikipedia article on this subject, “to the intervention by NATO and allied forces in the Afghan political struggle, following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, to dismantle the al-Qaeda terrorist organization and to remove from power the Taliban government, which at the time controlled 90 percent of Afghanistan and hosted al-Qaeda leadership.”

fghan activist, survivor of numerous attempts on her life, former member of the Afghanistan parliament, Malalai Joya, author of A woman among warlords: the extraordinary story of an afghan who dared to raise her voice appeared last Thursday  in interview with Democracy Now leading into the twelfth year of the United States’ invasion and occupation of Afghanistan ─ and even longer its collusion with oppressive factions (warlords, drug lords, terrorists, fundamentalists, corrupt politicians) arrayed against the independent rise and advancement of the Afghan people and their institutions. The presence of tens of thousands troops is “like hell for millions of Afghans,” Malalai Joya said. “Women are still the most and the prime victims” suffering “rape, domestic violence, acid attacks, burnings of the girls’ schools.” And violence continues to rise, she said.

Together with the horror of foreign troops is the “Taliban in different provinces doing public executions [of women], without at least bringing them to [Afghanistan’s] fundamentalist or mafia court,” she said. “They [Taliban] control Afghanistan day by day [and] are getting more powerful.” Foreign troops “double our miseries and the sorrows of our people. 

Unfortunately… imperialism and fundamentalism have joined hands to lead the world toward barbarism.

“That’s why we want the withdrawal of [foreign] troops from Afghanistan as soon as possible,” she said. Withdrawing foreign troops will lessen the power of terrorists. “If they leave at least the warlords and the Taliban, these terrorists, will not become even more powerful,” making it for them “easier to eliminate the democratic people of Afghanistan and increase the suffering or killing of innocent people who survive or remain in the country.…”

Clearly evident in U.S. character today, Joya says, is two-facedness. One face is “the dirty imperialist government.” Another is “the great people … who stand up against the wrong policies of their government, the war crimes and warmongers.”

The latter “lives in the hearts of millions of democratic justice-loving people around the world ─ especially oppressed people of the world. They are the heroes for my people,” she said. And Afghanistan needs Americans’ support against the “negative role of the occupiers” and against the “brutalities and barbarism of fundamentalists who are puppets of the United States.”

The Afghan activist called for “the support and solidarity of justice-loving people of the United States to join their hands with us. We need to be united and continue our struggle against the warmongers,” she said. Whether concerning Iran or Iraq, Palestine, Libya or Syria, “we should fight against the warmongers.”

Looking toward the future, the “great source of hope,” Malalai Joya sees, are “justice-loving people around the world, and especially in the United States,” engaged in “glorious uprisings against warmongers and economic crises.”

Yemenis took to the streets of a northern town on Friday to denounce the United States and Israel for interfering in the country. The protesters held a mass rally in Sa’ada against interference by Washington and Tel Aviv in the country’s internal affairs. Character of a violent people applauding extrajudicial killing: Capitol Hill incident

Why? They can get away with it ─ as along as Americans allow

She had not yet reached her 35th birthday. She was the mother of a daughter not yet two years old. She carried no weapons and discharged none. Yet police in the nation’s capital gunned her down in cold blood. And as Miriam Carey lay dead, her child orphaned, her mother grieving ─  Members of the Congress of the United States of America, the Honorables, stood in full chamber praising cold-blooded killers, applauding unconscionable deeds.

 

Some of the story reported so far

The woman driver was surrounded by police cars. She managed to escape and careened around a traffic circle, passing the north side of the Capitol building. She was traveling with a 1-year-old girl who avoided serious injury when police drilled multiple shots into the car, six fatally killing the mother. The infant is placed in protective custody.

 

The mother of the victim told ABC News that her daughter had suffered “post-partum depression after having her baby …, a few months later she got sick, was depressed [and for a time was] hospitalized.” Two law enforcement officials identified the driver [the assassinated woman] as 34-year-old Stamford, Connecticut, resident Miriam Carey.

Mainstream media had portrayed the incident as some kind of dramatic gun battle and car chase involving a deadly terrorist who attempted to attack the White House but when the lies dimmed and day dawned, the light of truth told of Carey’s worst crime, if a crime at all, as “driving erratically and freaking out at a checkpoint when police aimed guns at her head.

Contrary to initial media reports that Carey had somehow tried to breach sensitive White House property, the checkpoint was a temporary ‘outer perimeter’ fence, making it quite possible that Carey was confused and frightened as to why she was being stopped in the first place. The temporary checkpoint may have been part of a drill that was running simultaneously. 

Perhaps cognizant of the fact that cops routinely shoot unarmed innocent people for no reason whatsoever, Carey panicked and tried to escape. 

After a brief chase, Capitol police and Secret Service agents unloaded at least 15 rounds into Carey’s vehicle despite the fact that her 18-month-old child was sitting in the back seat.

Infowars dot com writer/editor Paul Joseph Watson concludes his Friday article saying, “The sickening reaction (media lies, politician applause for murder) to the tragic death of Miriam Carey again reminds us that the establishment loves to celebrate and justify the slaughter of Americans [but not only Americans] who apparently deserve to be executed [rather those whom they deem deserving of execution] instantly for daring to disobey the orders of anyone in a uniform.”

Press, Politicians applaud police killing in cold blood

One commentary observed, “It seems Congress in a bi-partisan fashion all stood to applaud the police action against a mentally ill woman who was gunned down in the nation’s capital. My sympathies lie with this young mother who was shot to death by police who seem to have had a ‘shoot to kill’ policy. Not a proud day for Washington’s finest!”

Standing on the floor of the Congress,  House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland joined the Majority Leader “in expressing our gratitude to the Capitol Police.” As he performed this unconscionable act, news reports said, he “was interrupted with over 30 seconds of sustained applause which evolved into a standing ovation” followed by Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s seconding of this moral outrage.

ssentially, lawmakers were expressing gratitude for the cops’ protecting them from the deadly threat posed by unarmed 34-year-old Connecticut resident Miriam Carey, a dental hygienist whom the media now demonizes as mentally unstable yet whose boss, Dr. Brian Evans, describes as a “happy” and “stable” individual; and friends describe as “friendly and dedicated.” Her former boss Dr Steven Oken says she was “always

happy”; neighbors describe Carey as “a nice young lady, stable.”

ANSWER Coalition’s Brian Becker asks and answers why Capitol Police shot to kill an unarmed woman who threatened no one, let alone the Capitol or White House or anyone in these places or among tourists. “It is because they (police) shoot first, ask questions later,” he says. “The police in Washington and around the country have a license to kill. They know there’s never a prosecution.

“And as we saw in Congress, the Congress members just cheered. They cheered over this slaughter. And it really was the slaughter of an unarmed black woman in front of her baby.”

Many people in the United States believe because of prevailing attitudes among politicians and the press, these shooters, as in other cases, will get off shot free. Becker said, “There’s a lot of skepticism: a lot of fear that this [Washington incident] too will be covered up, that there won’t be a serious investigation; it will be the police investigating themselves.…

 

“The police can always use the rationale that it is tense, that these are highly secured areas, that that’s why they must shoot first and ask questions later. But there were many, many other ways to disable that vehicle, to have stopped it. She was unarmed. She had a baby in the backseat. They didn’t have to resort to, first of all, to shooting her. And we don’t know the whole story yet. Was she stopped first, before that first barricade, by an undercover police officer? There are some stories that say that. She may have been panicked if she saw someone not in uniform approaching her or threatening her. And if she was suffering any sort of stress or mental problems, you can see how under those circumstances, how something could be triggered. We just don’t know the details.

“But we do know the police always resort first to shooting. And in the United States, thousands of people die every year because of the police.”

I’m more than certain that there was no need for a gun to be used [by police] when there was no gunfire coming from the vehicle.

While, “I don't know how their protocols are in D.C.,” she said, “I do know how they are in New York City… Deadly physical force was not the ultimate recourse and it didn’t have to be.”

The U.S. War on Afghanistan now 12 years old ─ longer than the official American war on Vietnam ─ has gone on for half a generation, or more.

On Sunday October 6, 2001, former President George W. Bush announced the attack on Afghanistan.  Some perceived the action as revenge for 9/11; but that was only a pretext for action that U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Vice President Richard Cheney and “other neo-cons” had been planning for many years.  On the morning on 9/11, Rumsfeld said:

…it was time to ‘go massive.’ 

‘Sweep it all up. Things related and not.’

The United States of America under the leadership of the Obama government has vastly increased the use of militarized drones and surveillance drones ─ especially against the peoples and lands of the Middle East, South Central Asia and Africa ─ as part of its expansion of “special operations” and “targeted (extrajudicial) killing”.

Across national borders and in violation of international law, “Reapers,” “Predators,” and “Golden Hawks”, all varieties of drones (UAVs, unmanned aerial vehicles), are the growing face of the U.S. “war on terror”; and these weapons have caused the deaths of thousands of people.

The Network to Stop Drone Surveillance and Warfare is therefore laying organizing grounds for a protest to occur within the United States on November 15 through 17, 2013

Protest at General Atomics in Washington, D.C., a major manufacturer of drones, Friday, November 15. Actions are called at other manufacturers around the country.

Drones Around the Globe: Proliferation and Resistance (Registration and Program) Washington D.C. the weekend of November 16-17, 2013.  Organized by CODEPINK, Institute for Policy Studies, The Nation Magazine, and National Lawyers Guild (Georgetown Chapter), coordinated actions will complement and support the gathering.

TBIJ’s “Naming the Dead”

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism has launched a dedicated website – www.namingthedead.org – which lists the known names of those reported killed by drones in Pakistan together with as much biographical information as can be gathered. At launch the site listed just over 550 names, collated from media reports, court documents and academic and NGO publications.

This represents little more than one in five of the 2,500 people that are reported to have been killed by drones in Pakistan. Of the named individuals, 295 are CIVILIANS, including 95 CHILDREN, while 255 are alleged militants. There are only two WOMEN identified.
