Violently entrenched faith-based-war-aid-made-waste ─ Wissing’s Funding the Enemy

Another account of continuing BREAKDOWN aided and abetted by U.S. war
Excerpt from Wissing’s excerpt by Carolyn Bennett

In his introduction to Funding the Enemy: How U.S. Taxpayers Bankroll the Taliban, author, journalist and scholar Douglas Wissing says the book depicts what he experienced and what he learned.

“Trundling around mountainous eastern Afghanistan in the team’s armored vehicles, dodging ambushes and hitting IEDs, I began to hear grotesque tales of corruption and failed development. Soldiers, diplomats, and development officials told me of a vast collusion between American and Afghan officials that resulted in U.S. taxpayers funding the Taliban.

‘We’re funding both sides of this war,’ one sergeant blithely told me.

“At first, it seemed preposterous. But as I encountered story after story, I began to realize the soldiers and aid people were telling the truth. There was a toxic system that connected distracted American careerists, private military and development contractors, Afghan kleptocrats, and wily jihadists.

‘It’s the perfect war,’ one U.S. intelligence officer sardonically told me. ‘Everyone is making money.’

“With the United States focused on Iraq, the strategy in Afghanistan shifted repeatedly—almost a strategy du jour as commanders and mission directors rotated in and out on absurdly short tours of duty. As the Afghan insurgency flared, Washington executed the typical bureaucratic response to a problem: throw money at it.

“But [throwing money at the problem] just made it worse. More money, more corruption, more  insecurity. Attracted to the increased appropriations, the guns and- aid crowd flocked to Afghanistan, engendering the “Kabubble,” wartime Kabul awash with international aid money and the private military and development contractors who fed on it.

“I discovered that war and development policies that sounded so foolproof from the podiums of Washington played out much differently on the front lines of Afghanistan. I observed the voraciousness of a corrupt Afghan government manipulating an arrogant, ADD [attention deficit disorder] afflicted American bureaucracy.

“I learned that the linkage between third-world development and U.S. national security that foreign-aid lobbyists peddled to American policymakers was a faith-based doctrine with almost no foundation in research.”

En route to London, dissent swirls around Olympics 2012

Waste in face of want
Editing by Carolyn Bennett

“Olympics Disaster: The [formerly Group 4 Securicor British multinational security services company headquartered in Crawley] G4S Security Scandal and Corporate Sponsors’ £600 Million Tax Avoidance,” July 16, 2012: Investigative journalist, author, filmmaker, photographer and Guantanamo expert Andy Worthington, http://www.andyworthington.co.uk/2012/07/16/olympics-disaster-the-g4s-security-scandal-and-corporate-sponsors-600-million-tax-avoidance/

Referencing a report published by Ethical Consumer, Worthington writes, “the Olympic Games’ corporate partners and service providers are exempted from UK corporation tax and UK income tax during the Games; and even though they are expected to bring in £2.7bn in revenues, they will avoid paying over £600m in tax.

“The Worldwide Olympic Partners are Coca-Cola, Acer, Atos, Dow, GE, McDonalds, Omega, Panasonic, P&G, Samsung and Visa, and the London 2012 Olympic Partners are Adidas, BMW, BP, British Airways, BT, EDF and Lloyds TSB.”

Legislation “also exempts all foreign nationals working on the games in the UK from paying income tax on any earnings. Thousands will be exempt from taxation from competitors to media workers (including journalists, technicians and producers) to representatives of official Games bodies and technical officials (including judges, referees and classifiers) along with the athletes themselves.”

“Our Olympic Hell: A Militarized, Corporate, Jingoistic Disgrace,” May 16, 2012, http://www.andyworthington.co.uk/2012/05/16/our-olympic-hell-a-militarised-corporate-jingoistic-disgrace/

“[In May], when it was revealed that the MoD was placing surface-to-air missiles on the roofs of residential buildings as part of the bloated security measures for the Olympics — estimated to cost at least £1.4 billion, to be paid for by taxpayers — there was a brief flurry of outrage, although not enough to bring the plans to an end,” Andy Worthington wrote.

“With the required numbers of security staff more than doubling in the last year, estimates of the Games’ immediate security costs have doubled from £282m to £553m. Even these figures are likely to end up as dramatic underestimates: the final security budget of the 2004 Athens Olympics were around £1bn.

“All this in a city convulsed by massive cuts in welfare, housing benefit and legal aid; spiraling unemployment and rising social protests. It is darkly ironic, indeed, that large swaths of London and the UK are being thrown into ever deeper insecurity while being asked to pay for a massive security operation, of unprecedented scale, largely to protect wealthy and powerful people and corporations.”

A Day of Mass Action sets off, involving the Counter Olympics Network (CON) and representatives from “Our Olympics, No UK Tar Sands, Coalition of Resistance, Occupy London, Save Leyton Marsh, Drop DOW Now, and others.”

OurOlympics: Reclaim London 2012

Our Olympics exists “to provide a hub for creating and promoting acts of civil disobedience around the London 2012 Olympics.”  Their online mission further states:
We believe that the London 2012 Olympics are an £11bn tax payer funded ad campaign for some of the worst offending corporations in our world.

We believe that public funds should be spent on public services, not redirected to private profits.

We believe the policy of Austerity is a lie. It is a means of imposing an economic apartheid upon the UK.

We believe that it is time for us to come together and make London 2012 the greatest act of non violent civil disobedience of our time.

Pioneers Ride and McAuliffe, educators linked in space

Young women in space
Some imprints begin early and last forever
Edited by Carolyn Bennett

SALLY RIDE

She was a scientist, a science writer, an educator, a pioneer, a leader, a woman lauded for having a “rare ability to understand the essence of things and to inspire.”

Early in life, science fascinated her. Her parents encouraged her, she told one biographer; in her formative years, chemistry sets and telescopes were her favorite "toys"; and in June 18, 1983, and October 5, 1984, she boarded the Challenger at the Kennedy Space Center and made history. She had been scheduled but did not take the space flight in 1986. Schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe did.

Educator

Five years after her historic flight, Sally Ride joined the University of California San Diego faculty as professor of physics and director of the California Space Institute. She coauthored with Tam O’Shaughnessy seven science books for children: To Space and Back (with Sue Oakie); and Voyager; The Third Planet; The Mystery of Mars; Exploring Our Solar System; Mission Planet Earth; and Mission Save the Planet. She created and directed NASA-funded education projects designed to feed middle school students’ fascination with science, including EarthKAM and GRAIL MoonKAM. She formed the company Sally Ride Science, creating innovative classroom materials, classroom programs, and professional development training for teachers to help “motivate young girls and boys to stick with their interests in science and to consider pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.”

Sally Ride has been inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame, the California Hall of Fame, the Aviation Hall of Fame, and the Astronaut Hall of Fame. She was recipient of the Jefferson Award for Public Service, the von Braun Award, the Lindbergh Eagle, the NASA Space Flight Medal (twice awarded). This year she was honored with the National Space Grant Distinguished Service Award.

She was a science fellow at the Center for International Security and Arms Control at Stanford University; a member of the Pacific Council on International Policy and served on the boards of the Aerospace Corporation and the California Institute of Technology. She was a member of the President’s Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology, the National Research Council’s Space Studies Board, and the boards of the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment and the Carnegie Institution of Washington.

Dr. Sally Ride (May 26, 1951-July 23, 2012) was a U.S. physicist, born and raised in Encino, California, and credentialed at Stanford University (BS in physics/BA English, MS in physics, and Ph.D. in physics). Sally Ride served on federal commissions that investigated two space shuttle disasters: the Challenger and the Columbia.

CHRISTA MCAULIFFE

Sharon Christa McAuliffe died on the vessel Sally Ride might have taken that January day in 1986

On January 28, 1986, Christa McAuliffe had been selected and trained in the NASA Teacher in Space Project; and with six other crew members, she boarded the Space Shuttle Challenger that blew up 72 seconds into launch at an altitude of 48,000 feet. McAuliffe was 37 years old.

Educator

Christa McAuliffe was a social studies, law, economics, civics and history schoolteacher in the U.S. States of Maryland and New Hampshire. She designed the course “The American Woman.” She had been lauded as a gifted teacher, a role she would have played ably for the schoolchildren of America, indeed the young of the world had that winter day turned out differently.

Christa McAuliffe was born (September 2, 1948) in Boston, Massachusetts, and died serving her profession, her country, and particularly the young, at Cape Canaveral, Florida (January 28, 1986).

Routinized, depersonalized killing executed by government, justified by media has tragic consequences

Iraq
Environment of violence breathed with the air of morning and the setting sun
Excerpt, editing, bracket, italics comment by Carolyn Bennett

Since his adolescence, he has breathed “a society in which political leaders encourage and promote a form of social paranoia,” a population “called upon to be ‘on the alert’ for ‘suspicious’ individuals and unknown threats,” writes author and lecturer David North.

The people are told that “danger lurks everywhere” and “the sole defense against this unknown but supposedly ever-present threat is violence”— violence “practiced on a gigantic scale by the country’s leaders.” In one part of the world or another, every day, North observes, “America is killing ‘enemies.’”

Depersonalized, unknown to the assassin (Aurora)

This is the environment of violence compounded by the social pressures of years of economic crisis that acted on the mind of James Holmes,” North writes, and “the most striking feature is the randomness of the killings.”
The massively armed killer enters a darkened cinema of theatergoers and begins firing.
Pakistan
The killer does not know the people he is shooting.
He can hardly see their faces.
For him, they exist only as targets of his weapons.

Depersonalized, unknown to the assassin (drones hitting Afghans, Pakistanis, Yemenis, Somalis)

“This form of depersonalized killing appears as a reproduction of methods used by the United States in its deployment of drones.”

Officials have admitted that many people hit by missiles “have been killed solely because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The “technicians” manipulating the drones from thousands of miles away do not know the identities of those they are killing.
In the “technicians’” minds, they are merely eliminating the depersonalized representatives of some abstract threat.
Under orders of the U.S. president, such actions “are based on carefully developed plans and calculations.…

Yemen
The State’s “‘rational’ killings,” North concludes, “trigger irrationality within society.

The routinizing and depersonalizing of killing carried out on a mass scale by the government and justified by mass media must have tragic consequences for American society” [and indeed for society far beyond the United States of America]. One can make a legitimate argument, he says, that one of those tragic consequences surfaced Friday in Aurora, Colorado.

Drones by executive order incinerate people “half a world away”

Drone attack
Somalia
Violent nation’s week of domestic/international violence
Re-reporting, editing, comment by
Carolyn Bennett

Culture of violence: Sherwood Ross

“I cannot speak for gun manufacturers and I don’t know what goes on inside their minds but I do believe there is a culture of violence in the United States,” Ross said this week in an interview with Press TV.

“We have a culture of violence that is drummed into our children and expresses itself in American exceptionalism in our foreign policy.”

Run by the military industrial complex, he said, “the country is slipping into dictatorship. The people of the world have got to be made aware that it is dangerous. It is armed and dangerous. The United States is spending $700 billion for war and, by contrast, half a billion dollars for the Peace Corps.”

These figures must be turned around, he said.

There has been no end to violence and there must be an end to it. “The question is: when will the American people do something about the violence?”

U.S. drone
Press TV photo
Favored weapon in U.S. international violence
Coward’s way: Conn Hallinan

“The issue is not the morality of drones. Drones have no morality; nor do they have politics or philosophy. They are soulless killing machines.

“The morality at play is with those who define the targets and push the buttons that incinerate people we do not know half a world away.”

DRONES in YEMEN

In a lawsuit filed on Wednesday, the relatives of three U.S. citizens have named senior U.S. Defense Department and CIA officials in the killing of U.S.-born Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, his 16-year-old son Abdulrahman al-Awlaki and naturalized U.S. citizen Samir Khan. The dead lost their lives in non-UN sanctioned U.S. assassination drone strikes in Yemen.

Yemeni suffering
The drone assassination program is an absolute breach of the U.S. Constitution especially when it is carried out against U.S. citizens and especially against nations, such as Yemen, where there has been no U.S. declaration of war. Under the U.S. Constitution, this warfare stands in violation of “the separation of powers” that exists between legislative and executive branches of the U.S. government.

Though the U.S. president, Barack Obama, confirmed in January of this year that his government uses unmanned drones in Pakistan and other countries, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency refuses to release the official memoranda [reminiscent of “a fraudulent documentation used by Alberto Gonzalez, George W. Bush, Richard Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld in the cases of U.S. torture in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay”] which grant the president legal authority to approve drone strikes.

Shadowed and illegal
In an interview late last month with Press TV, columnist for Foreign Policy in Focus Conn Hallinan said,
People really do not know anything about it so it is a kind of a shadow war. It allows the United States to take part in series of wars. There are at least three to four drone wars going on right now without ever referring to the Congress or bringing the issue before the American people.
It is a stealth way of engaging in warfare.

Drone attack
North Waziristan
DRONES in PAKISTAN

That day in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal region of North Waziristan, at least five people reportedly died and three others were injured in an airstrike carried out by a U.S. assassination drone.

These U.S. strikes on the tribal regions persist disregarding the Pakistani government’s repeated calls on Washington to end the drone attacks.

A news report yesterday said, the Pakistani people had to postpone a polio immunization campaign in parts of its tribal belt after there were threats to the polio program workers from pro-Taliban militants in the region.

Pakistani tribesman protest
War, conflict, retribution, invasion, occupation, provocation have far-reaching consequences.

In the tribal regions, at least 160,000 children in North Waziristan and 80,000 in South Waziristan and more than 111,000 children in Khyber tribal agency, according to health officials, “are likely to be affected if Pakistan fails to administer anti-polio vaccine in the region.”

Vaccination problems in 2011 “led to Pakistan’s highest number of polio cases in a decade, 198 compared to 144 in 2010” — Pakistan is listed among the three countries where polio remains endemic — and given current polio vaccination problems, “health experts fear that the world will consider Pakistan an exporter of polio” if it fails to get control of the situation.

This year’s postponement of immunization followed a pro-Taliban militant group’s reported ban on polio vaccinations in the Waziristan region along the Afghan border to “protest the U.S. assassination drone attacks.”

U.S. assassination drones on Pakistan and the U.S. war on Afghanistan persist as do protests rising from the Pakistani people

Pakistani protesters in the city of Peshawar reportedly said this week that they will stop NATO supplies “by any means, even by force, if the [Pakistan] government fails to reverse its decision” to reopen supply routes to foreigners aggressors. “They have also vowed to continue their protests until the termination of the assassination drone strikes.”

Protesters maintain that the decision of the Pakistan government to reopen supply routes for U.S.-led NATO forces in Afghanistan offended the whole nation and bypassed the unanimous resolution of the parliament, which had demanded that the United States stop drone attacks.

In Monday’s demonstrations rallying for a reversal of the government decision and chanting anti-U.S. and anti-government slogans, protesters remembered thousands of innocent civilians killed by U.S. assassination drone attacks in Pakistan.

DRONES in SYRIA

Without legitimate reporters on the ground, news is but rumor, propaganda contrived for this or that faction or force.

On the high level killings (killer(s) unknown) this week in Syria, media hysteria reached fever pitch. Reported assassinated were Syrian Defense Minister Rajha (the top Christian in the government), crisis management chief Turkmani, and Deputy Defense Minister Shawkat; and the later death of the Syrian intelligence chief. Further unconfirmed reports from non-NATO channels said Russian consultants also died in the attack.

Non-Western news reports said NATO’s goal was unambiguous: “nothing less than the destruction of the modern Syrian nation, followed by chaos, partition, subdivision, warlords, Balkanization, and a failed state …”; and the “media apparatus coordinated by White House advisor Ben Rhodes went into high gear, attempting to spread panic, hysteria, and reports of the immediate collapse of the Syrian state.”

However, Dr. Webster Griffin Tarpley noted at Press TV, “the nature of this attack remains unclear” and it is “unwise to draw conclusions about an infiltrated suicide bomber or other hypotheses emanating from the NATO brainwash apparatus.

“In the abstract, the capabilities shown in this attack could range anywhere from a cruise missile or drone to the capabilities deployed in the assassination of Rafiq Hariri of Lebanon.”
U.S. drone arrives in
Turkey

DRONES in TURKEY

The Turkish Hurriyet Daily cites a Defense Industry Executive Committee (SSIK) report assigning the Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc. (TAI) the task of conducting studies for the production of Turkey’s first armed drones. “The new ‘Anka Plus A’ drones” are said to be of the “high-altitude long-endurance class” with capabilities “similar to the ‘U.S. Reaper’ and ‘Israeli Heron.’” Last fall, Turkey reportedly tested a domestically-made medium-altitude long-endurance Anka drone.

This latest report comes a few days after Turkish officials reported receiving “one of five surveillance planes sold to Turkey by the United States.”

DRONES in AFRICA
Kenya pitted against Somalia

Somalia's famine
Citing a Wall Street Journal article Reuters reported today, “The Pentagon is seeking to send hand-launched drones to Kenya as part of a $40 million-plus military aid package designed to help four African countries fight al Qaeda and al Shabaab militants, notably in Somalia. Kenya would get eight ‘Raven’ unmanned aerial systems — an unarmed drone that can be used to identify targets for strikes by ground forces or other aircraft.

Last year the United States provided Ravens to Uganda.

Posted at Global Research Ca., Chris Cole writes this week that people of the United States might increase their opposition to the use of drones when the reality sets in that “‘non-approved’ nations can also use drones.”

Rumors persist, Cole writes, “that the Syrian regime [is] using a drone to target artillery strikes in Homs.” Slaughtering innocents in Syria and Waziristan connect—all are “justified in the name of ‘security.’”

Somalis are some of the poorest people in the world and the United States is sending assassination drones against them.  The United Nations News Service reported yesterday that a year after the declaration of famine in parts of southern Somalia, an estimated 3.8 million people are suffering desperately: “2.51 million are in urgent need of aid and a further 1.29 million are at risk of sliding back into crisis.”

But no amount humanitarian assistance (real or militarily armed), no amount of “charity” can help a people under attack by the most heavily militarized, arms-selling power in the world. People remain in poverty and want because inordinate power and force imposed by cruel and corrupt people make it so.

Those supporting “targeted killing by drone strikes seem to do so in the mistaken belief that by ‘taking out the bad guys’ we can increase security for all,” Chris Cole writes.  However, “stark reality is the opposite of this — and the sooner the latter wins the argument, the sooner support for targeted killing and drone strikes will disappear altogether.”

Well then …

Why are Americans “shocked” when violence not only erupts now and then but is a state of being: continuous and unabated, aided and abetted as a “birthright” perpetrated on U.S. cities, towns, schools and villages? Given this character, Americans should not be “shocked” and I expect they are not really shocked.

“I’m SHOCKED” is no more than empty utterance, mantra mouthed every time news of horrendous domestic violence reaches international airwaves (“goes viral” as savvy contemporaries say) so much so that the reality of it can be neither denied nor ignored.  In their “I’m SHOCKED” response, Americans are saying, “This isn’t really us,” this isn’t who we are; they are denying their character, their penchant for violence — which is precisely who we are: a violent people.

In the face of U.S. violence against Afghanistan and Pakistan, Syria and Somalia, Iraq and Iran, Bahrain and Yemen, Americans take the luxury of sticking their heads in the sand or in drugs or the television. Americans do not want to hear about this violence. They pretend this violence is not only thousands of miles away, but in some other universe of “aliens.” The carnage is being committed by some distant person, place or thing: some militant, militia or terrorist, al Shabaab or Taliban or al Qaeda, some “evil” with or without axis.

What is true is that we are that person, place and thing. We are the violence we say we deplore, that which does but does not “shock” us. We are a violent people and only we can and must change us.

Military solution to foreign gov’t/media-instigated Syrian crisis “war crime”—Saman Mohammadi

West's ongoing
wars on peoples of
Middle East
Propaganda provoking threats to peace, all acts of aggression constitute grave violations of post-World War II UN Convention and Human Rights Declaration
Re-reporting, editing by Carolyn Bennett
This operation of disinformation, directly managed from Washington by Ben Rhodes, the U.S. deputy national security adviser for strategic communication, aims at demoralizing the Syrians in order to pave the way for a coup d’etat.  NATO, discontent about the double veto of Russia and China, will thus succeed in conquering Syria without attacking the country illegally. Whichever judgment you might have formed on the actual events in Syria, a coup d’etat will end all hopes of democratization.—Saman Mohammadi—
Hillary Clinton Threatens Syria with ‘Catastrophic Assault’ that would smash the Syrian State”
International Criminal Court
It is a Coup d’état, assisted by electronic means: We have these continuing reports that Ben Rhodes in the Obama White House, in the National Security Council has arranged that at a certain point for the CIA and NATO to take over Nile Sat, Arab Sat; kick off the Syrian state television, al-Dunya television and other pro-Syrian television organizations and replace that with completely fake programming, showing the flight of Assad out of the country, the entry of rebel death squad forces into the downtown squares of Damascus and Aleppo and Homs, attacks on the presidential palace and so forth, all fake.
At various sound stages, either in Saudi Arabia or in Qatar, methods used last year in Libya, ‘Operation Mermaid Dawn’ could now be attempted so that NATO could argue that there is an internal Coup d’etat going on and whatever NATO would do at that point would be invited in, by a group claiming to be the government of Syria.
It is a very dangerous game… essentially brinkmanship. We are at the area of brinksmanship in terms of a regional war. — Dr. Webster G. Tarpley—

War made by gov't-media propaganda (and MIC)

War on Syria
War III or IV or...
Media today not only support war, they produce war, says researcher and analyst Saman Mohammadi in an article published last month.

Without delving more deeply into the background of propaganda -made wars, recent history shows that the broadcast of false news is not new: during the past decade, significant steps have been taken in the art of propaganda.

A pop music station named ‘Free Radio of the Thousand Hills’ (RTML) in 1994 gave the signal for genocide in Rwanda with the cry, ‘Kill the cockroaches!’ Saman Mohammadi writes.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 2001 “used the media to impose an interpretation of the 9/11 attacks and to justify its own aggression against Afghanistan and Iraq. At that time already, it was Ben Rhodes (now President Obama's deputy national security adviser) who had been commissioned by the Bush administration to concoct the Kean/Hamilton Commission report on the attacks.” [The 9/11 Commission or National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States chaired by Thomas Kean and co chaired by Lee H. Hamilton was established by an act of the U.S. Congress and signed into law by former president George W. Bush on November 27, 2002, ‘to prepare a full and complete account of the circumstances surrounding the September 11 attacks’ and to address preparedness for and response to the attacks.]

The CIA in 2002 “used five TV channels (Televen, Globovision, ValeTV and CMT),” Mohammadi continued, “to make the public in Venezuela believe that phantom demonstrators had captured the elected president, Hugo Chávez, forcing him to resign. In reality the Venezuelan president had been the victim of a military coup d’etat.”

France24 in 2011”served as information ministry for the Libyan CNT, according to a signed contract.

“During the battle of Tripoli, NATO produced fake studio films then transmitted them via Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya, showing phantom images of Libyan rebels on the central square of the capital city, while in reality they were still far away. As a consequence, the inhabitants of Tripoli were persuaded that the war was lost and gave up all resistance.”

International Criminal Court
All of this, he says, is in direct violation of   principles of International Law (Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights relating to the receiving and imparting of information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers); and the United Nations General Assembly resolution adopted at the end of the Second World War to prevent further wars (Resolutions 110, 381 and 819 forbid to set obstacles to free exchange of information and ideas [as the current cutting off Syrian TV channels] and ‘all propaganda provoking or encouraging threats to peace, breaking peace, and all acts of aggression.’

“By law, war propaganda is a crime against peace, the worst of crimes because it facilitates war crimes and genocide.”

Civilian dead
Mohammadi continues to outline a malicious U.S.-perpetrated catastrophe and its far-reaching consequences.

“By waging an illegal war against Syria, the Obama administration, following the Neo-con plan down to every last detail, is throwing the Palestinians under the bus and destroying any chance of a negotiated settlement between Israel and the Palestinians.
Displaced
Homeless

“No one,” Saman Mohammadi says, “can honestly justify a military solution to a foreign-instigated security crisis in Syria. The U.S. government is going against history, world public opinion, and international law in Syria. Bringing down Assad is not moral or legal. Sponsoring terrorists in Syria and unleashing NATO death squads to terrorize the Syrian people and destabilize the Syrian government is a war crime. Syrians are fighting for their survival.
Displaced
Homeless
everywhere
crossing borders

“The international community must get real and hold the leaders of the United States, Israel, Britain, and Saudi Arabia accountable for their crimes against humanity and crimes against the peace. These are rogue terrorist states run by plutocrats and banksters; not responsible, democratic, and legitimate international actors.

“They want to destroy Syria, not save it from its current regime.

“The only moral response by ordinary citizens around the world to the crisis in Syria is to stand with the Syrian people against the war criminals who lead the United States, NATO, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and their Jihadist terrorists.”

U.S. Complicit in Egyptian military’s “gross human rights violations”—NLG

Endless foreign relations in violence: Middle East/East Africa

Editing, re-reporting by
Carolyn Bennett
“This isn’t about sides, this is about confusion. This is about creating enemies where there aren’t any. … The whole gotdamn world is falling apart: peace reigns, freedom reigns, democracy rules.”
“How are we going to keep the military industrial complex chugging forward without clear-cut … pit-faced scum-sucking evil breathing down out neck — threatening our very shores; and my job is to make sure the other side keeps on fighting, whatever side … whatever side we’re officially not on this year.” — Gorman Lennox (Mickey Rourke) speech in closing scenes of film “White Sands”—
Middle East
East Africa

Old civilization, old greed, old exploitation

“Egypt’s arms industry,” UPI reported last year, “is the oldest, the largest and the most technologically advanced in the Arab world. The country's extensive military establishment, which has vast economic holdings, is funded to a large extent by $1.3 billion a year in U.S. military aid.… Egypt’s armed forces — with 500,000 personnel in uniform and about the same number in reserves — are equipped with U.S. weapons systems.”

Funds provided by the United States “must be spent on U.S. equipment and services”; thus United States has effectively “become a subsidy for U.S. contractors. Lockheed Martin, Boeing, General Electric, Raytheon, General Dynamics and BAE Systems all do big business with Cairo—selling fighter jets, tanks, radars, artillery and other hardware to Egypt.

“In 2010, Lockheed was paid $213 million for a new batch of 20 F-16s for the Egyptian air force, which has some 180 of the U.S.-built fighters. That makes Egypt the fourth largest F-16 operator.

“Lockheed Martin has made an estimated $3.8 billion from F-16 and other sales to Egypt. Boeing, which sells Cairo CH-47 Chinook transport helicopters, has earned an estimated $1.7 billion.

“General Dynamics Land Systems has banked some $2.5 billion by licensing the manufacture of M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks in Egypt” and “more than 1,000 Abrams tanks have been produced at factories in the suburbs of Cairo.”

Egypt’s military industry, UPI reported, extends at least as far back as the early nineteenth century.

NO LAND an ISLAND No People Apart
Foreign Relations in Violence by Bennett
Secrecy, mendacity, complicity, irresponsibility

The National Lawyers Guild in June reported U.S. complicity in Mubarak-era and post-Mubarak era military abuse of Egyptians’ human rights.

“Egypt’s state attacks against protesters, striking workers, and the poor have in some ways escalated since the fall of the Mubarak regime,” the NLG wrote on its return to the States.

“Over a period of less than 18 months, the current government has imprisoned 12,000, injured 6,000, and killed over 1,500 [and] the U.S. government has been complicit in these gross violations by providing direct military and financial aid to the current Egyptian regime, by maneuvering politically to help the regime cling to power in the days after January 25, 2011, and by delaying for almost 15 years the passage of the Small Arms Trade Treaty, which could prevent the regime from using American weapons against the Egyptian people.…

Egyptian uprising
“During the people’s uprising, U.S. corporations continued to ship tear gas and other weaponry to the very government that was shooting at unarmed men, women, and children in the streets of Egypt.”
The people of Egypt today have had no access to information about the extent of military-private ownership of their country’s industry and resources. That is because the military, with the support of the United States has made it illegal to access that information.

“In the face of efforts by the military to maintain control of the Egyptian government and public sphere, Egyptian people must be protected in their efforts to take back their country. However, any efforts to deconstruct the economic and state structures built by and for the benefit of a small elite will fail unless the current government allows full transparency into its domestic operations.

“Accordingly, the National Lawyers Guild supports the central call of Egyptian activists for transparency and freedom to access information relating to the complicity of the U.S. government and corporations in the activities of the repressive military regime. This should include disclosure of all information relating to the provision of U.S. economic and military aid, to military and intelligence training and cooperation, and to the sale of military equipment.

“As American human rights activists and attorneys, we demand further that the U.S. government refrain from any action that compromises the right of the Egyptian people to self-determination and refrain from obstructing the immediate transition to civilian government.”

National Lawyers Guild outlines position and advocacy on United States and Egypt:

We support our Egyptian allies in calling for an immediate and unequivocal end to arbitrary detention, torture, disappearances, and the general criminalization of political dissent, as well as amnesty for all political prisoners.

We support our Egyptian allies in calling for an end to all military tribunals and for the prosecution of all members of the former regime, army, and police who orchestrated and/or engaged in any acts of violence against civilians.

We support the demands of Egypt’s people to uphold both domestic and international human rights law.

We call on the U.S. government to immediately stop providing the Egyptian military with money and weapons, as both forms of aid are being used to violate domestic and international human rights law through the repression of legitimate forms of political dissent.

We call for full disclosure and accounting of all financial and military aid given to the Egyptian government since the 1979 Camp David Accords.

We call for full disclosure of all arms sales agreements between U.S. corporations and the Egyptian military.

We call for a prohibition on exporting arms, including tear gas and other “small arms,” by any American corporation or private arms dealer to Egypt.

NLG  4/23/12:
Police Barricade

We call for the full enforcement of the Leahy Law, which prohibits U.S. military assistance to foreign military units that violate human rights.

We support the passage of the Arms Responsibility Act (HR 5749) which would prohibit the “transfer of defense articles and defense services to the governments of foreign countries that are engaging in gross violations of internationally-recognized human rights.”

We recognize the devastating economic and social impact of neoliberal policies implemented at the behest of the U.S. government and international institutions and call for an end to U.S. economic intervention through the provision of aid with neoliberal conditions and other forms of coercion.

We stand in solidarity with all Egyptians who continue to confront the forces of state repression and work for the establishment of a legal system that will protect dignity, freedom, and basic human rights. These demands are embodied and expressed in the broadly unified revolutionary chant for “bread, freedom, and social justice.

The NLG delegation “is working on a full report of its findings due out later this summer.” The National Lawyers Guild is also “working with organizations and activists to organize around the demands listed above and pushing to hold the U.S. government accountable.”
